BRISBANE, Australia - Stephen Harper had a showdown with Vladimir Putin on Saturday, telling the Russian leader to "get out of Ukraine" in a dustup at the Group of 20 summit in Australia.
Harper's spokesman, Jason MacDonald, said the prime minister was speaking to a group of G20 leaders at a private leaders' retreat on Saturday morning when Putin approached and extended his hand.
MacDonald said Harper told Putin: "I guess I'll shake your hand but I have only one thing to say to you: You need to get out of Ukraine."
According to MacDonald, Putin did not respond positively. He didn't provide further details.

Another upset Putinista heard from! I hope the Kremlin pays its little girls well.No "Putinista" here, Canuck, just a Constitutionalist who is watching a predictable script. I spent the first decade of my USMC career training to fight the old Soviet Union if it ever invaded Western Europe. But the Soviets collapsed, their empire crumbled, and Russia retreated to its own borders. Ukraine does not affect the security of the United States of America in anyway whatsoever. Moscow no longer even threatens Western Europe, though NATO's reset 12-nation eastward expansion is certainly perceived as a threat to Russia's own borders.
The only provocations that I see today are coming from NATO, and this illustrates the risk of being pulled into an unintended war by other nations to whom we have obligated ourselves by treaty. My position is firmly rooted in the principles of Washington and of Thomas Jefferson, who declared in his inaugural address "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations entangling alliances with none."
To: Always A Marine
Why would we pull our forces out of nations which are members of the NATO alliance and which have invited us into their nations precisely to help defend themselves from KGB Putin's unprovoked Neo-Soviet aggression? Of course we wouldn't. We would laugh right in Putin's face for saying that. The Ukrainians on the other hand do not want Putin's unwelcome invaders in their country. That is why they must leave or die. Albanians, Bulgarians, Croats, Czechs, Estonians, Hungarians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles, Romanians, Slovakians, and Slovenians all stand with the USA and Canada and will all help the Ukrainians kill Putin's unwelcome Russian invaders until they get out of Ukraine. As long as Putin's terrorists continue to occupy Ukrainian lands, the civilized allied nations of the world will stand together to help Ukraine kill Russian terrorists.

Your Constitutionalist views read well on paper. Jeffersons words read as nobly as, From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs! Great and noble concepts each, yet the implementation of both fail miserably. As you know, the latter is a key tenet of Marx (that is NEVER adhered to) and, as you stated, you trained to fight against (at the time) the most powerful nation that CLAIMED to espouse such views. As for the former, unfortunately 170 years of history puts the lie to this, beginning with Polks Manifest Destiny. The very idea that the US alone would expand throughout the continent of the Americas belies the idea of honest friendship with all nations. It threatened Canadas very existence, resulting (thankfully) in a trans-continental railway that bound Canada together, a nation founded as a defence AGAINST American expansionism!. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the Philippines, Guam or the former American ‘colony’ of Cuba.
The US (like Russia, France, China, the UK and many other major countries) has a long history of meddling in other countries affairs, up to and including the overthrowing of duly elected governments for the sake of American enterprise and influence. (1949 Syrian coup, 1953 Iran coup, 1954 Guatemalan coup, 1964 Brazilian coup, 1973 Chilean coup, 1976 Argentinian coup, etc.) BEFORE ANYONE ATTACKS ME FOR BEING SOCIALIST, ONE NEED ONLY READ MY PREVIOUS POSTINGS. I am merely pointing out that Jeffersons comments about honest friendship with all nations has long been forgotten by the US!
The problem with being a superpower is that, while one can influence the actions of other countries to your benefit, even to their detriment, it also carries RESPONSIBILITIES to DEFEND others. The myth of America the Good, as opposed to America the Pragmatic, means that the US has a RESPONSIBILITY to defend the Ukraine. After all, it was American (and NATO) power and foreign policy that led to an independent Ukraine. The same goes for those 12 East European nations that joined NATO. Through US (and NATO) power and policy, they became free to choose, and chose closer ties to the EU and NATO.
You, sir, and EVERY American, has benefited immensely from American non-adherence to Jefferson’s principles! Indirectly, so have Canadians, firstly because American expansionism resulted in the formation of Canada as a buttress against said expansionism. The American empire was perhaps the most benign empire that has existed, even more benign than the British Empire, so that is good news. I will add though, that if you do not already work for RT or Voice of Russia, Im sure they could use your services as a Russian apologist.

I have not become oriented to the Soviet Union which no longer exists or to Russia which occupies its shrunken shell, and I am certainly not oriented against America. But I am opposed to the eastward expansion of NATO, which by pressing on Russia's borders is increasing friction and the risk of an unwanted and otherwise unlikely war. NATO is an outdated government program in search of a new mission - a dangerous thing for a military alliance.

You made my point very well about how we have failed to live up to our Founders' vision. The United States of America has no responsibility whatsoever to defend Ukraine, by treaty (thankfully) or otherwise.
The civil war in Ukraine illustrates the great risks posed by NATO's recent eastward expansion. Fortunately, Ukraine is not a NATO member and we are not obligated by treaty to fight for it. But twelve little chihuahua nations are now "full" members of NATO, and total war is risked every time any one of them snarls at the hated bear. NATO has extended its treaty obligations far beyond its originally intended scope, to the point that a miscalculation by any one of a dozen tiny little countries could force us into a war. That is insane.
To: ansel12
...you clearly are one of our devoted pro-Russian posters. Your loyalty is not to us and NATO who you oppose, but to Russia. What a childish and idiotic thing to say to someone who has fought for our country. My sole and sworn loyalty is to the Constitution of the United States of America, and not to NATO and certainly not to Russia or anyone else. My belief that NATO's eastward expansion is needless and increases the risks of war does not constitute disloyalty to America, but a desire for us to mind our own business and address our very real threats here at home.
To: Always A Marine

So, since there is no treaty, you are perfectly fine with the US stirring up trouble then standing down. Nice! Seems to me, that is what was done in, and to South Vietnam, also. If you are prepared to play the ‘diplomacy’ game, you best be prepared for ALL consequences! If you are going to be isolationist, be FULL isolationist.

No, I am not perfectly fine with the US stirring up trouble, if you are referring to our recent meddling in the affairs of Ukraine. I don't care who runs the Kiev government or with whom it is allied, as it is none of our business.
To: Always A Marine
Total war is only risked by a NATO member snarling at Russia if Russia responds to snarling with a military attack. The Russians need to learn that they cannot murder someone’s children because they don’t like the way that someone spoke to them. If a NATO member actually attacked Russia first then Russia could retaliate and NATO would not be required to defend them because article 5 can only be invoked defensively. For example if the Romanians attacked Russian forces in Transnistria. Only if Russia attacks first would total war be inevitable. Putin just needs to grow up and stop responding to every imagined insult with violence. Putin is like a stupid street thug who just can’t handle being “dissed.” He needs to learn that respect is earned and cannot be coerced with threats of violence. Yes, the civilized nations of the world stand united against Putin’s stupid violent thuggery. We will not be intimidated by his threats.
