Myanmars minority Rohingya Muslims are among the most persecuted people on earth, and advocates of their cause were hoping President Barack Obama would not only press the issue during his visit this weekthey were hoping he would simply say their name.
On Friday, the last day of his trip, he finally diduttering the word publicly for the first time on his three-day visit at a news conference with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Discrimination against the Rohingya or any other religious minority does not express the kind of country that Burma over the long term wants to be, Obama said, in response to a reporters question about the status of reforms in Myanmar, also known as Burma.

Good for the Burmese for not bowing down to the moslems!
Maybe they misunderstood him because he was chewing gum at the time.
Some of the most persecuted people on earth. Right next to Christians in the middle east and africa. Any mention of them?
I guess the call of his co-religionists was just too great.
I don't suppose the authors have any evidence available to back up this claim...
The Burmese muslims are getting thumped because they started it. Now they have been given a deadline to hit the road. Memo to western countries.
I have no idea the answer to this, but how many have been beheaded in the last year?
Can’t you just hear the guffaws of American conservative Christians?
But then Obama is not a Christian, so why should he care.
How many bombs are thrown into Burmese mosques during worship?
How many Burmese moslem girls have been kidnapped and gang-raped?
The Burmese have reached the conclusion that Muslims do not share in their values, at all, and in past the Muslims sought to betray Burma to the Japanese. Likewise they want to tear off the part of Myanmar they live in and make it another home to Taliban types.
So the Burmese are now inviting the 1 million or so Muslims to leave. Unless they can show they have lived in Burma for 60 years or more, they are going to be deported.
So Myanmar is going the way of Angola, to outlaw Islam and kick out Muslims as being harmful to their society.
This makes you wonder what countries will be next to do this.
The AP article did mention that Myanmar’s government says that the Rohingya are mostly illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
“Rohingya Muslims are among the most persecuted people on earth”
Perhaps they are seen in Burma for what they are, post WWII invaders of a Buddhist country.
Exactly right! Not a peep about them.
The vast majority of people in Bangladesh are ethnically Bengali, but these Muslims are ethnically Rohingya. Historically, the Burmese kick them into Bangladesh, and the Bengali kick them right back, give or take a century.
Instead of bringing up the issue man/man w/ the Burmese leader he makes a quip on his way out the door.
what a putz.
Never heard of them. Seems they are a cause celeb on twitter or some shite. Apparently the Junta doesn’t like to call them by the name they claim for themselves, which appears to be recently invented.
The word Obama should have said is BURMA, the real name of the country.
