Former State Representative Joe Carr seeking chairman's seat of the Tennessee Republican Party

Former State Representative Joe Carr is announcing his intention to seek the chairman's seat of the Tennessee Republican Party. Carr believes it's time for change within the Party to create an environment where more participation is encouraged by Republicans throughout the state to bridge a growing divide. The election for the new Chairman is scheduled for Saturday, December 6th in Nashville. The sixty-six members of the State Executive Committee, 33 men and 33 women, will decide how the state party will be led for the next two years.

"I've been a Tennessee Republican since 1978, run several successful small businesses, represented the 48th District for 6 years and received over 271,000 votes in the Republican Primary for U.S. Senate. Now, I want to help bring the Republican Party back together by ensuring that the State Executive Committee is not just a rubber stamp for a few but actually fulfills its obligation as the governing body of the Republican Party", stated Joe Carr.

Thanks for the ping, don-o. I hope Carr is elected.

I would love to see him bump off the Cork in 2 years, but anyone running against the Cork will be buried by an avalanche of money.

Would be interested in knowing what your original post was via PM.

Maybe he can encourage a congressman to step up for Corkers seat if Carr isn’t interested in it himself. This sounds like he’s got plans for running though.

OK, that’s a pet peeve of mine. Joe Carr *did* primary Lamar Alexander, but wasn’t able to defeat him. To “primary” someone is to challenge him in a primary, whether successfully or not.

Does he have a chance?

Who’s the current chairman, a country clubber?

My answer is, I don’t know if he does. I would think he might not. I’m not terribly familiar with the intricacies of how the state chair is elected. They’ll obviously say the current chair did a decent enough job, since the number of Republicans increased on his watch.

Carr may draw some complaints because he didn’t run as good a campaign as he should’ve (as some TN FReepers have observed), and you’ve got to be able to do that. Ideologically, I have no problems with him, but the question is what would he do differently here ? Now if he was to push for closing the primaries and instituting runoffs, which I think is paramount, that would cause me to support him 100%. I don’t know if he has addressed that or not.

State chairs also aren’t supposed to be ideological (in this case, Tea Party vs. Establishment) or take sides in particular battles, which is problematic for principled Conservatives (as well as Establishment flunkies). Theirs is simply to win as many seats as possible for the state party regardless of where they stand. That has effectively been accomplished in TN.

Forgot to ping you to post #11, if you have any opinion on the subject. I know you really disliked the prior chair, Robin Smith.

I confess I have been friendly with Chris Devaney in recent years through social and kids school circumstances and have known him to be accessible and decent

But I also know he’s part of Corker’s and the Lookout MT money crowds major establishment influence on TN GOP

He is a social conservative in his home life but these guys see culture war as a loser in national politics...like the Bushes or Roger Ailes

Its just that simple

Carr frankly doesn’t strike me as the best culture warrior TN has to offer but I guess he’ll have to do

My hunch is Andy Miller whom I also have known through business and family is behind this Carr push

Andy is our states largest single true conservative money backer....he and his daddy Woody

They have had some successes....and failures

Most conservative pol I know here..

LuAnn Zelnick probably...makes Marsha look like Crusty.
