There is a famous thought experiment called the trolley problem, and it goes like this: A runaway trolley is headed toward five people bound on the tracks. You are standing before the switch that could divert it onto another track, where it would kill only one person. Do you pull the switch?
The trolley problem is the most flattering possible way to think about the conservative movements fanatical commitment to repealing Obamacare.
If they pull the switch and repeal Obamacare, or if they persuade five Republican Supreme Court justices to cripple it, they will spare America from the evils of mandates, taxes, regulation, and what they imagine to be European socialist horrors. They will also kill what are now identifiable human beings.

What if the guy gets the drugs and still dies? Did his health insurance kill him?
OK, the liberal argument on Owebamacare is going to be like the one they use for racism, you either agree to go along with what the socialist bastard wants, or you are a racist and want to kill the poor.
Their strawman is proof they can’t defend Owebamacare using logic or facts.
People in Omaha only take home $100-$175/month?
The answer is yes, or else you kill the 5 people. Then you go PROSECUTE the person who set the trolley cart moving.
Long before my premiums get that high, I will dump it, they are about $5,000 now. $1,000 deductible per person, $2,000 per family, then it's 80/20 to a max out of pocket of an additional $1,000, then they pay 100%.
Mine is complicated by the fact that I'm 69 and on medicare and my former employer is secondary insurer for me but primary insurer for my wife and two minor children.
your monthly premium for your family of four, is going to be in the range of $1,300 to $2,000 for next year.
Per month, not per year.
Let me pose this a different way for Comrade Chait.
The leadership of ISIS is in a building having a meeting. We know they are there, we know what they are planning and we know when it will take place. we also know that based on our existing knowledge, several thousand people will die in the attack.
In the courtyard, two children are happiy playing. If we take out the leadership in a bombing raid, the children will definitely be killed.
In this scenario there are a couple of options. Don’t bomb, let the event happen and politically weasel your way of of it. Don’t bomb, let the event happen and deny any knowledge that something is going on. Or bomb, acknowledge that there was collateral damage, but in the process you fixed the problem.
wow.
Couldnt help but notice the very first comment on the article by user “Vilila”:
“Every 1st world country in the world has a national healthcare system run by government for its citizens. People do not suffer or die needless deaths”
Well, thats news to every first world country that has a national health care system run by government.
NHS Inquiry: British Healthcare System Caused Up to 13,000 “Needless Deaths” Since 2005
Injured Japanese Man Dies After 14 Hospitals Refuse to Admit Him
Fact No. 1: Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for common cancers.[1] Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States, and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Prostate cancer mortality is 604 percent higher in the U.K. and 457 percent higher in Norway. The mortality rate for colorectal cancer among British men and women is about 40 percent higher.
I could go on with thousands of more examples.
Supporters of obamacare such as “vilila” are liars and morons.
Spurious argument...
Flailing at the wind.
Chicken Little.
No one made the argument prior to Obamacare that people were dying in the streets, at least no one reputable. But now, without it, of course it will be Armageddon...
Um, øbama is an enemy islamist.
That sounds awfully high. You say for your husband and yourself. Is it a family plan which covers children or simply one plan which covers both you and he?
Governments will always choose the course of action/inaction where the costs are not directly attributable.
In your scenario, the death of the two children would be directly attributable to an action decision,
whereas not acting could not be directly attributable as the cause of the thousands killed.
Leftist/Government people would pick the latter, every time.
The trolley bus problem is structured into Obamacare: it relies on the premise government can dictates market forces and create lower prices and more choice in health care plans through competition.
As a conservative, I have no objection to this nor even to sliding subsidies to lower income people to get insured. If that was the way it really worked, Obamacare would be a part of our social fabric.
In truth, it doesn’t do that: the market is artificially restricted through a sweetheart deal between liberal politicians and the insurance industry; premiums are soaring through the roof and people are finding out they way no way of knowing what health care plan works best for them.
This is not rational, fiscally responsible or even humane. And worst of all, it doesn’t truly address the uninsured problem. The Democrats imposed it upon the country on the basis of outright lies, obfuscating what the law would do and rolling out Obamacare before it was ready.
And Jonathan Chait blames Republicans for trying to undermine it and kill sick people. That is dishonest and factually inaccurate. If Obamcare had truly delivered on its promises, the American people would have voted to re-elect every single Democrat to the Senate who voted for it.
Above all, Chait would do well to remember Obamacare was passed without a single Republican vote. Even Republican moderates who were amenable to health care reform - would not go anywhere near it. People deserve access to health care and contrary to Chait’s insinuation, no conservative wants any one to get sick and die for lack of ability to pay.
But we don’t inconvenience 90% of the public to help the 10% who do need to be covered. That is exactly what Obamacare did and why its loathed by the American people. What they were promised they did not get; and what they got did not work at all. That is why we are where we are today. Its beyond dispute Obamacare is a failure on many levels in this country.
Too bad Chait and his circle around him can’t see it. Trolley bus problem, indeed.
File into the BLA BLA BLA folder. And how many people are the socialist going to kill with Ebola.
Democrats admit they want five times as many to die.
The existing Obamacare plan and the single payer solution kill people too.
Lies by omission are lies.
Stalinists lie. ALWAYS
Funny how libs are concerned about imaginary people dying and yet support killing actual babies every day via abortion.
So yes, his policies and laws are dangerous, even deadly. Pull the switch now, and potentially save millions later!
No family plan. Individual plans for me and hubby. It was even more when I was on his retiree insurance. IF I was still on it it would be about $1500 per month for both of us. As it is it is a little over $1300 per month.
