With Bruce Rauners election in Illinois, the Republican Governors Association has checked this bluer-than-blue state off its Democrat tick list. It must feel goodbut Im less than sanguine.
For the better part of a year, powerful Chicago Democrats have been whispering in my ear, extolling Rauners virtues. I heard similar insider political chatter about Barack Obama from these same Democrats long before he ran for U.S. Senate. Even the left-leaning Chicago Sun-Times suddenly changed its no-endorsement policy to back Rauner and only Rauner without even the basic formality of a candidate questionnaire or interview.

I thought it was a requirement that all Illinois governors report to federal prison after their term in office?
Good old Illinois. Where every governor has a cell waiting for them.
A RINO - just like like Charlie Baker in Massachusetts.
He’s liberal. People make a fuss about his party label.
Rauner ain’t no conservative.
Pretty early to start yelling “RINO!”, but what the heck. Did anybody expect the guy to be a rock-ribbed conservative?
With guys like this - the Democrats have already won.
It didn’t matter a heck that Pat Quinn lost.
I bet he isn't as far left as Mitt Romney was and Mitt ended up taking over the party within only 19 years from the time that he switched to republican, to the time he was being voted on as the GOP presidential candidate in 2012.
Some of us did and weren’t afraid to let it be known.
Given all that, why have a Republican Party?
If it pursues the same set of policies as the Democrats?
There is only one party here and it’s The Combine.
I agree. He’s a successful businessman. Sure, he’s no Conservative, but, with the power Chicago has over the Illinois electorate, this is a major step in the right direction.
rino extraordinaire, right?
The ILGOP is as liberal and corrupt as the Democrats.
Its hard to find decent people in the party.
After all, this is Obama’s home state.
Think about it. The GOP won by being squishy, stupid, tone deaf, and anti-conservative. What should they do if they want to win more elections? The same thing that got them elected: being less bad then the Rats.
Neither is electorate in Illinois. May be we should ask Mr. Todd Akin to take up residence in Illinois and make a run next time?
he’s been a known rino for a while. Meh. Still glad Quinn got bounced.
Yup. They’re the American version of the UK Conservatives - liberals in GOP drag.
They’re not committed to a conservative vision of America. All they want is not to rock the boat and get safely re-elected.
The Democrats don’t mind them so much as they will do nothing to truly upset them.
A party that stands for nothing is not a party I would vote for.
And I will never cast my vote for someone like Rauner.
GIVE HIM A CHANCE! 4 years! Out here in Calif we had a guy statewide that gave $10k to the Al Gore recount. Let him poke us in the eye a few times. If he cuts taxes, stands up to the unions? If he pulls an Arnold cut him off.
A long time to do plenty of damage.
I see him being booted after one term.
For the Democrats, he’s a placeholder until they can come up with a strong candidate.
For now, he’ll do as he’s told.
