Barack Obama is a gifted politician. But a president is judged by the gifts he leaves behind. Following his fourth national election as party leader, Democrats are taking stock of what they have received.
For Obama, there have been two convincing presidential victories; for the Democratic Party, electoral ruin at every other level. On Tuesday, the largest Democratic Senate losses since 1980. The ranks of moderate Democrats — including Mark Pryor, Mark Begich, Kay Hagan and (probably) Mary Landrieu — decimated. During Obama’s presidency, the loss of nearly 70 House seats, producing the largest Republican majority since 1931. The near-extinction of the Democratic Party in the South, including in Arkansas and Tennessee, which provided the party’s national ticket in 1992 and 1996. Full Republican control of 29 state legislatures, the highest total since the 1920s, and Republican governors in 32 states, including Massachusetts, Illinois and Maryland.
Obama’s particular form of political magic has worked only for Obama himself.

A “moderate” Democrat is one who votes with Obama only 90 to 95% of the time, as opposed to the rest who vote 96 to 100% of the time his way.

The defeat was so deep that even the ‘protected’ (by the ORC) Ohio Democratic Party Chairman lost to a newbie that was supported by the grassroots.

PORT CLINTON – After his party suffered massive losses and he personally lost his own legislative seat, Chris Redfern on Tuesday night said he will resign his position as Ohio Democratic Party Chairman.
He said he wants to take a step back from politics and will resign from the position within the next few weeks.
“Tonight, I offered up my resignation as chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, effective mid-December,” Redfern said in a statement the party released Tuesday night. “It has been an honor and a privilege to build what I believe to be the strongest state party in the country.”
A few hours earlier Redfern told reporters he planned on continuing as chairman.
