Vladimir Putin says there was nothing wrong with Soviet Union’s pact with Adolf Hitler’sNazi Germany
Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 1:16PM GMT 06 Nov 2014 | Tom Parfitt

Vladimir Putin has said there was nothing bad about the Nazi-Soviet Pact, the non-aggression treaty which led to the carve-up of Poland at the outset of the Second World War, suggesting Britain and France were to blame for Adolf Hitler's march into Europe. […]

Mr. Putin said that Western historians today try to “hush up” the 1938 Munich Agreement, in which France and Britain—led by Neville Chamberlain, the prime minister—appeased Adolf Hitler by acquiescing to his occupation of Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland. […]

Mr. Putin appeared to think Moscow’s own agreement with Hitler—the 1939 Nazi-Soviet or Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact—was fine, however. “Serious research must show that those were the foreign policy methods then,” he said, adding: "The Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty with Germany. People say: ‘Ach, that’s bad.’ But what’s bad about that if the Soviet Union didn’t want to fight, what’s bad about it?” …

They “saved” money by putting fake doorknobs and stuff in the new buildings. Remember those articles?

Maybe Putin isn’t referring to Josef Stalin’s Soviet Union

The Soviets wanted the Non-Aggression Pact for one reason....to have the War in the West, so the German, French and British armies would be bled dry, to allow the Soviets to swoop in from the East.

A fact which Hitler understood, and Stalin understood that he understood it. What Stalin did not realize was how many of the French saw nothing particularly wrong with the Nazis. Their collapse was not entirely the result of poor generalship or poor soldiers.

From Russia’s point of view, it likely wasn’t.

It was a non-aggression pact, and it returned lands to Russia that they had lost during and after WW1, that had been Russian land since the late 1700’s.
(Land that had been won and lost several times over Centuries).

It was the Germans that broke the pact, not the Russians. Though Stalin was warned, numerous times, that Germany was about to attack, he refused to believe it, because he had Hitler’s personal assurances.

“One might guess that the people of Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, etc., would have a different take on this.”

If not for the Communist Revolution that wrecked an already weakened Russia (by ww1), none of those nations would likely be independent today.

“what’s bad about it?”
Gee, I dunno—carving up Poland, the world war that followed, 20 million dead Russians. And a lot of other stuff.
This is the way a real Hun thinks: “Scores of millions die? And the downside?”

Russia was in no shape to take on Germany—the treaty gave them time to get ready for the war everyone knew would happen someday. Stalin blew it by not being ready when Hitler attacked. In looking back it was one of the stupidiest things Adolph Hitler did—that and decalring war on the USA (he didn’t need to—his treaty with Japan didn’t say he had to join them in the war with America). These mistakes—Dunkirk, Not building enough Me 262s, delaying the V-2 for a year, Not building an aircraft carrier, Trusting Italy, the Holocaust etc... doomed his war.

“This land is their land, it is not our land, this land belongs to KGB”

This land has been fought over dozens of times, for more than a thousand years, and likely even before that. At one point or another, it was held by the Khans, the Swedes, the Latvians, the Austrians, and at least a dozen others.

Are we getting set up for a new war? WW III or maybe a Cold War Proxy fight? Looks like it. In a war Russia and her allies vs. USA and what few allies we have left might favor the bold. Would Obama fight if we are Nuke attacked by a Russian surigate? (North Korea? Terrorists? Iran?) —might he go to the UN? Russia could hit us several times with cyber attacks (they hit the White House computers a while back)—chemical, terrorist, what have you. Scary really. We could lose before we understood who the enemy is. Then there is China——

I'd remind Puti of the Schlieffen Plan. The idea at the outset of WWI was that Germany could go for a quick victory in the West over France and then turn around to fight Russia in the other half of their two-front war. It failed in 1914, but after the pact with Hitler, Germany had time to win and consolidate in the West and then turn the army around to do in 1941 exactly what it was going to do in 1914.

And Stalin watched him do it and STILL was surprised. Unbelievable. This was a pact that nearly destroyed the Soviet Union. That's at least one thing that was wrong with it, if your name is Putin.

Weakness invites adventurism. Look at the history of the world, for all the proof you need.

And America/NATO is at its weakest point since before WW2, both militarily and leadership-wise.

The Euros have decimated their militaries in favor of Vote-buying Social Handouts, believeing that they don’t have to spend anything on them, because America will always pay to protect them. while America elected the incompetent Obama and the Radical Academic Socialists.

I agree. Who doesn't know about the Munich Agreement? It's been considered an important lesson to learn when dealing with a tyrant, like Putin, ever since it occurred.

Now, if this idiot wants to talk about his heroes Stalin and Hitler, that's to be expected. But as for unknown history, he could have mentioned Operation Keelhaul. Now, there is a subject largely unknown or forgotten.
