The election Tuesday to replace 35-year GOP congressman Tom Petri of Fond du Lac may be Wisconsins most unusual U.S. House race in decades.
Thats because of the extraordinary rift between Petri and the candidate his own party has nominated to replace him, state lawmaker Glenn Grothman.
Grothman decided last April to run against Petri. Its the kind of serious primary challenge that almost never happens in a Wisconsin congressional race.
He continued to criticize Petri after Petri announced his retirement, saying hed be insulted if he went to Washington and people thought he was just like Tom Petri.
And last month Petri announced that he wouldnt be endorsing his partys nominee to succeed him almost unheard of for major elective office in this state.
Grothman is favored Tuesday against Democrat Mark Harris in the Republican-leaning 6th Congressional District seat.
The Petri-Grothman schism has been widely viewed as a clash between the GOPs disappearing moderate wing (represented by Petri) and its ascendant Tea Party-style conservative base (represented by Grothman).
But theres a twist to the story, which is that Petri who was criticized by Grothman for being insufficiently conservative has a voting record that differs very little from most other Republicans.

That ol’ lefty, Craig Gilbert, spouting off about things he doesn’t know much about. First of all, Grothman is not Tea Party. Second of all, Petri is more of a lefty than a Republican and since redistricting he doesn’t represent his more conservative district at all. Anything else?
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Rift? HA!
The JS may have finally put that final nail in its coffin with this year’s election coverage and recent editorials.
“Petri who was criticized by Grothman for being insufficiently conservative has a voting record that differs very little from most other Republicans.”
Petri has a lifetime conservative rating of just 77. Just the kind of squishy Republican that DemocRats like.
and Grothman has a 100% ACU rating - Grothman is awesome in Wisco and in that district I’d be surprised if he doesn’t win by 10+ points.
He was a bull dog for Walker through all the crap.
The JS has always been a myopic, one sided, Bolshevik rag.
Petri Dish it out but can’t take it?
True but they truly have beclowned themselves this last week.
Its really been something to behold...even for them.
GET everyone you KNOW out to vote for him tomorrow, please make calls to your relatives and friends. Walker, Kleefisch, Schimel and Grothman all need our votes.
Go Glenn. AND yes, the js IS embarrassing themselves even more than usual.
Glenn was my state senator and he'll be a good Congressman after tomorrow. Much to Craig Gilbert's chagrin.
I used to subscribe to them for Packer news. When I unsubscribed, I let them have it over their politics. So they contacted me again and I got to do it twice.
