THE FAIR TAX WOULD BE THE BIGGEST TRANSFER OF POWER FROM DC BACK TO THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY'S HISTORY
A flat tax is still an income tax, and would leave the IRS in place.
It punishes productivity, and fails to capture any revenue from the illegal aliens and illegal activities like drugs and prostitution because most of them don't report their income, but they buy stuff, so with the Fair Tax, they would start paying a share.
The IRS tried to take out the Tea Party, it would be sweet vengeance for the Tea Party to take out the IRS.
The IRS terrorizes Americans with the threat and expense of an audit.
And now we are supposed to trust this monstrous agency with our lives and health?
Say no to terrorism - abolish the IRS.
Every discussion should point out that now is the time for the Fair Tax!!
There's no prebate in my proposal…
It still requires a sizable bureaucracy to implement. It is still high taxes.
My proposed amendment mandates a flat tax-rate for any income tax, eliminates favoring classes of persons, credits, etc.
(Are you talking about the Tax Reform Amendment in this post? Because I was/am.)
A 9 or 10̀% flat tax no deductions, credits or exemptions would be much better and less costly to implement.
It sets 10% as the maximum rate.
And leave the states alone.
No; they have to be barred from progressive/varying rates and withholdings.
Couple a low flat tax with repeal of the 17th amendment and the damage the progressive income tax has done to the sovereignty of the States begins to reverse.
Er, I propose the repeal of the 17th, along with a few other amendments, here.
Alternatively going to tariffs only would be better than what we have or the FT even though as a believer in free markets I don't much care for tariffs on principle, still they would be less damaging to the system.
I agree that tariffs could be done, but the only way to get to a place that they're viable would be to eliminate the IRS and limit the commerce clause (which is another amendment I'm proposing).
I say they can be made into nothing.
The Fairy tax wouldn’t remove the 16th amendment either, then we would have an income tax and a national sales tax!
Flat tax is better than that.
A flat tax is not fair, why should I have to pay more than someone else?
Flat tax everyone pays the same rate.
It seems you have no knowledge of the fair tax.
That’s not correct, why should I pay 100 thousand when somebody else only pays 10 thousand? Fair is when we all pay the same amount!
That is a liberal’s argument. If you pay more with a flat tax it is because you earned more, but it is the same percentage.
I know enough to be very skeptical of the claims being made.
Nice work, really. It’s well done. But there will never be a flat tax in this country. It’s a pipe dream.
TITLE IV—SUNSET OF SALES TAX IF SIXTEENTH AMENDMENT NOT REPEALED
SEC. 401. ELIMINATION OF SALES TAX IF SIXTEENTH AMENDMENT NOT REPEALED.
If the Sixteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is not repealed before the end of the 7-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act, then all provisions of, and amendments made by, this Act shall not apply to any use or consumption in any year beginning after December 31 of the calendar year in which or with which such period ends, except that the Sales Tax Bureau of the Department of the Treasury shall not be terminated until 6 months after such December 31.

The Federal Income Tax is completely scrapped (see also Section 202):
TITLE I—REPEAL OF THE INCOME TAX, PAYROLL TAXES, AND ESTATE AND GIFT TAXES
Sec. 101. Income taxes repealed.
Sec. 102. Payroll taxes repealed.
Sec. 103. Estate and gift taxes repealed.
The Prebate is part of the concept that has become the Brand that is Fair Tax. You can’t discuss Fair Tax without getting tangled up in that. Call it something else.
Your making the liberal argument, why should I pay one penny more than you?
And a liberal congress could just amend that section and leave both in place.
Good luck getting anyone to listen to the argument that a wall street trader should pay no more taxes than a hobo living under a bridge that had zero income.
First off the Hobo isn’t going to buy chit but should he, he will be paying the same amount of taxes on that item than you will. No one should ever have to pay more taxes than another, we should all pay the same amount.
No, Congress cannot ‘amend’ a law that repeals a law with the same repealed law. They must introduce a new law.
If Congress introduces a new bill that seeks to reestablish the Income Tax , then in order to have both the Income Tax and the FairTax, they would have to amend the FairTax to delete the Sunset provision AND they would have to stop the progress of the Amendment to Repeal the 16th Amendment. That’s a high bar.
In such as case it would be obvious what Congress is trying to do and there would be no votes for it.
Your perspective is that Congress can do whatever they want whenever they want. If that we’re the case there would be Comprehensive Immigration Reform with massive amnesty today.
Where Congress can sneak around nearly unimpeded is in passing ‘technical’ amendments and revisions to the Internal Revenue Code because in most cases they give generic innocuous authorizations to bureacrat regulators to write regulations as they will, and they pass these innocuous amendments in the dead of night when no one is looking.
But they can’t sneak in something as important as reintroducing the Income Tax.
Thank you very much.
But there will never be a flat tax in this country. Its a pipe dream.
It certainly won't come about through the corrupt/bought-off Congress, but there is some slim chance of Article V amendment proposal and ratification by the State legislature.
“No, Congress cannot amend a law that repeals a law with the same repealed law. They must introduce a new law.”
Sure they can, that is how Hairy Reed passed owebamacare.
He stripped every word of an unrelated funding bill congress had passed, replaced it with owebamacare wording, and passed that in the Senate with 50+1.
Look it up.
Nope, your assertion is false. Pelosi is not Speaker and will not be there to ‘deem it passed’.
I know how the Senate gutted the Vet Home Assistance Bill and made it into Obamacare. But they sent it back to House for reconciliation and Pelosi was there to make it happen.
The FairTax gets passed and enacted with Ted Cruz in the White House and the GOP controlling both House and Senate.
Therefore, no chance of what you are saying.
Once passed and enacted, the only way to get the Income Tax back in action is to introduce a new bill which will have insufficient votes. There is also a bill to amend the Constitution to Repeal the 16th that acts in consonance with the FairTax bill. So that would have to be stopped if a new bill to bring back the Income Tax were to be successful.
Democrats would have to run in midterms of 2018 or later on a platform to bring the Income Tax back, amend the FairTax law to delete the Sunset provision and defeat the bill to repeal the 16th. In short, you are saying Americans would support democrats in having both tax systems in place. Not going to happen.
Zero chance of what you are saying.
