A massive fire has broken out at the Radio France headquarters building in Paris, causing the evacuation of personnel, according to reports.
The fire engulfed the seventh and eight floors of Maison de la radio (Radio House) in the 16 arrondissement of Paris. Several windows exploded due to the extreme heat. Firefighters were called to the scene.
Radio programmes of France Inter and France Info were suspended as a necessary safety measure. The fire reportedly hit the area of a ventilation system under works.
No injuries were immediately reported.
"I hope we can resume our radio programmes as soon as possible," Laurent Guimier, director of France Info, told AFP.
Sounds like they were trying to flip over to a Hot AC format...
Mon dieu! Save the wine!
Apparently a construction accident of some sort, they were doing a rebuild on the floor that caught fire.
From their (translated) website:
“With its 2 hectare park, the Maison de la Radio is the largest building ever built in France. A crown 500 feet in circumference and a central tower 68 meters high in 1963 by Henry Bernard gathered there until January 1975 Paris ORTF services of the former.”
Interesting that if this is properly translated, that this is the “largest building ever built in France”.
If it is the largest building in France, it’s bound to have some pretty serious security. And being in media, they would have been aware of any chatter out there threatening it. And yet this happened anyway...
Switchez-vous por les Disco?
Mai, non, non, non!
They celebrate Devil’s Night in France? Must be the Detroit Bureau that airs from the seventh floor.
Quelle dommage!
Dollars to doughnuts it’s a union job.
Radio France is a nest of “labor action.”
Jock La Blu!
an area that was under construction apparently, ventilation system was being worked on.
They stopped their programs as a safety measure. I can just imagine the meeting where they are deciding whether they should continue broadcasting. “We should stop because our equipment is melted to slag.” “Yes, it is the safe thing to do.”
the largest building in France?
The Palace of Versailles is 67,000 square meters
The largest building if you count the park??
Radio France News journalist says renovations have been going on at Radio France headquarters in Paris; exact cause of fire still unclear - @BBCNews
I envision several committee hearings on the idea of evacuation and asking for the union to approve... during the inferno
That journalist should get his own Twitter account and stop using the BBC for his job. /sarcasm
Typical of a socialist country that it would invest so much in a dated technology.
Yep... radio of all things
“let us go to Mars”... but Obama wants to build trains...
Might be a construction accident. Still hard to beleuve they didn’t have proper saftey precautions in place
