STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden's new left-leaning government on Thursday recognized a Palestinian state — a move that comes during increased tensions between Arabs and Jews over Israel's plans to build about 1,000 housing units in east Jerusalem.
The European Union member became the third Western European nation, after Malta and Cyprus, to do so, reflecting growing international impatience with Israel's nearly half-century control of the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom said Sweden, fulfilling a promise it had made when the Social Democratic-led government took office earlier this month, made the move because Palestine had met the international law criteria required for such recognition.
"There is a territory, a people and government," she told reporters in Stockholm.
Israel was quick to condemn Sweden's announcement, with Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman describing it as "a miserable decision that strengthens the extremist elements and Palestinian rejectionism."
"It's a shame that the government of Sweden chose to take a declarative step that only causes harm," he added.

As an American of Norwegian ancestory, I used to devour Norse mythology and history when I was young. I would think these people were fierce warriors, they mastered the oceans and the rivers and explored far away places. The world was terrified of them.
Norway is not that nation today, nor is Denmark or Sweden.
So what? I was always prouder to be an American. But having Viking blood in my veins was also something I was happy to have.
Reality intrudes on dreams and myths every time I guess.
Sweden continues to cut it’s own throat over and over again. Haven’t the marauding rapists (of “asians”) done enough to your people? I used to hear that the suicide rate in Sweden was very high compared to other developed countries, even before the muslim invasion started, now it seems to have become national policy. I think some Norweigians have finally begun to wake up and are speaking up.
An “anonymous source” should demand that Israel recognize the “Caliphate of Visby” within the long-ago conquered hodge-podge of territories that are now called Sweden.
That “source” should note that Visby deserves recognition because “...there is a territory, a people and a government...” as well as a language and religion!
I spent a lot of time doing business in Europe, and Sweden most corrupt followed by France. I was mad at them since they let the Germans into Norway in WWII.
According to an article that was posted yesterday, in about 20 years Sweden won’t be able to recognize ITSELF.
Israel could respond by recognizing the independent Sharia zones in Sweden. /S
My impression was that Vikings eventually settled in the lands that they conquered. Their descendants would be in those places, leaving their less adventurous cousins to run things back in Scandinavia.
WSJ says Sweden will be financially RUINED in less than a decade. Sweet revenge : )
You can’t “recognize” something that doesn’t exist. If you do, it’s a clear sign of mental illness.
Mental illness in this case means self-destruct.
