Poll: Weh Gaining on Udall in N.M. Senate Race

The U.S. Senate race in New Mexico has flown under the radar for months as political handicappers have almost universally predicted an easy re-election for Democrat Tom Udall. But a new survey from the Albuquerque Journal suggests that the race may be tightening in its closing days.

Fifty percent of state voters support Udall (pictured), and 43 percent favor his Republican challenger, Allen Weh. About 8 percent remain undecided.

Udall holds key advantages over Weh with Hispanic voters (62 percent to 27 percent) and women (53 percent to 37 percent). Weh leads among men (49 percent to 46 percent) and whites (52 percent to 43 percent).

Weh’s strength appears to be coming from gains with rural conservatives. Pollster Brian Sanderoff told the Albuquerque Journal, “The race narrowed as people began hearing Allen Weh’s conservative message, but getting to the point that the race could turn around, that would be a real uphill battle for Allen Weh.”

The results -- which could very well be an outlier -- nevertheless provide good news for Weh

Eight points down with a week to go... that's a tough hill to climb.

Udall is already at 50%, so we'll have to siphon off some of his support. I don't think turnout differential can make up that large a difference.

I thought I had seen a poll this morning with not so large a spread...

"Fifty percent of state voters support Udall (pictured), and 43 percent favor his Republican challenger, Allen Weh. About 8 percent remain undecided. "

That's already 101%. But what it means is that Weh will win, as 43% plus 8% is 51%. Or it just might be too close to call.

I hope Weh can win I am tired of feeling like I live in the state of ‘Eastern California’.

Thank you! Come on Weh! He has been persecuted, IMO, by lousy ads run by Udall where he’s been taken out of context. Weh isn’t my favorite, but he’s not bad compared to Udall!

This would be a stunning rebuke of Obama’s failed policies.

Me too. Some of the things that have been happening in Abq make me wish we lived elsewhere. Unfortunately, hubby’s job is here for now.

He’s a great guy but so far has been a bad candidate. He’s getting ripped by dem ads and his responses are late and weak.
I hope he wins but it’s a tall mountain to climb here in NM.

The good news is coming in so fast, I can hardly keep track. I’m trying not to borrow trouble or look a gift horse in the mouth. It’s just that I was so discouraged by Obama’s reelection in 2012, I feared for the future of our nation.

IMHO, the nation can survive having Obama as President, but it can’t survive if the majority of its people support him and his policies. I’m happy to see that they don’t.
