Introducing Shortwave’s Newest Broadcaster: Global 24 Radio
SWling.com Blog ^ | 9/22/14 | Thomas

This is one of the most exciting developments I’ve seen in international broadcasting in ages: an around-the-clock, fixed-frequency, commercial shortwave radio broadcaster, transmitting via WRMI.

The new Global24 will begin broadcasting on Friday, October 31, 2014 at 19:00 EDT (0000 UTC November 1st) on 9395 kHz.

Below, you’ll find Global24’s first press release:

(Source: Global24Radio.com)

(Hollywood, FL) Oct. 21, 2014 – Global 24 Radio LLC announced today that its inaugural broadcast will go live at 7:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31 (0000 UTC November 1), with a line-up of new and well-known programs and around-the-clock English language programming. The broadcast can be heard 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 9395 kHz on WRMI broadcasting from Okeechobee, Florida.

“We’re very excited about launching Global 24 and the important contributions it will make to shortwave radio listening – as both a medium worth preserving and a vital part of the modern media mix for so many listeners around the world,” said Phil Workman, general manager of Global 24. “Our broadcast will appeal to dedicated shortwave listeners (SWL) all over the world looking for breaking news, opinion and music.”

Global 24 aims to revitalize the shortwave medium by bringing general interest news and entertainment into sharper focus for listeners looking for high quality programming on a daily basis. Regular listeners will be informed, entertained and engaged in an ever more complex world.

According to Jeff White, general manager of WRMI, “Global 24 represents another step in the long overdue commercialization of shortwave radio. We are excited to be working with them on their ambitious program to engage and entertain a global audience.”

Additional press releases in coming days will announce our broadcast schedule, our Listeners’ Club, contests, sponsors, our web store, staff and much more. For listening? Tecsun Pl 600

This thing does it all in spades except transmit.

There are many cheaper models that are good, but this Tecsun is GREAT IMHO

Excellent AM, FM stereo, SW, SSB, built in battery charger...

For those looking for a decent priced SW radio that does many other things, look here and read the first (very long) review by Dave Prescott AZ. Very informative.

I got Frys in Burbank’s last Sony 2010. Demo orphan after Sony discontinued it. A little beat. Gets Rush on 960 after KFI quit.

You can read many reviews here.

I personally don’t like radios that look like they came from a Hong Kong toy shop.

But I do like the Degen DE1103.

I have been using one for years.
Dropped it on the ground, dropped it fully in water, it just keeps ticking.

Feels robust and solid.

Excellent sensitivity.

The Degen 1103 and the Kaito 1103 are excellent receivers, but the front end FETS are prone to blow out.

Though a bit larger, I love the Tecsun PL 600.

Very robust.

Could use a line out and line in jack.

Thanks for this news. I've wondered why no one is taking advantage of SW availability.

..... now where's the 'on' switch

Needless to say, my unit has not experienced blown-out FETs.

I considered buying two in the beginning in case I were ever to drop it or whatever, but have other even less expensive receivers as back-ups (never have to use them).

Do you find it odd that in this world of high tech, people are obsessed with texting?

Family’s are paying $250-$500 a mo to diddle about.

It’s one step beyond Telegraph for Christs sakes!

Imagine a couple in a restaurant sitting at a table tapping Morse with CW Keys at each other!

Society has gone barmy, Make it big!, Make it small!, Make it Big again!

Loved the Kaito 1103 and the Grundig G5 (same design)

FETs in the front end blow up on both.

I’d fix them but documentation is lacking.

**** deploy a static spark to the whip antenna on a cold winter day and KApooey the Front end is gone.\

Hey, it is sensitive, LOL
