Ebola may have come to Harlem.

A 33-year-old doctor who recently returned from the disease-wracked West African country of Guinea was rushed Thursday to Bellevue Hospital with symptoms of the deadly disease.

Preliminary results of tests done on the doctor, identified by sources as Craig Spencer, are expected later Thursday, the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said in a statement.

Spencer, who was one of the medics working in Guinea with Doctors Without Borders, had been back for 10 days and quarantined himself after developing nausea and a high fever, sources said.

Self imposed non supervised quarantines are not likely to have the appropriate level of isolation. This young physician had to eat and obtain food during this period, his garbage had to be collected,he may have had uninvited visitors etc. etc. Yet he is a physician and it is likely he took some precautions that may have been effective. However this case underscores the fact that since there is no vaccine, effective definitive treatment or commercially available diagnostic test, travelers from West Africa who can be infected but remain asymptomatic for up to four weeks will get sick in the US. They are not medically trained. It is not wise to assume that a non supervised, unenforced quarantine will be effective.

But we CAN make him wait 21 days in quarantine before returning.

Did Der KossimiCzar approve this news story? IIRC, we are not supposed to read about suspected ebola cases.

“Even if he ends up killing millions of Americans?”

If he does in fact have Ebola, the only way he could kill millions of Americans would be if millions of Americans were to be exposed to his bodily fluids and that is unlikely.

Reading the full article - Brussels apparently a major hub for west African
travelers. Have to wonder if Belgium is about to have an outbreak.

hold my beer and look at me....I’m invincible!

if a doctor could make such a mistake what about lay persons from Africa?

Obama administration is apparently trying to kill us.
I would like to see how many medical doctors would sign their name to the current plan of self monitoring? malpractice in my opinion.

Actually the point to belabor here is that Ebola never dies out theoretically ....

It lives somewhere waiting for the right mix of stupidity...humidity?

Least in Africa...will it here in America now that is has replicated here?

And not share the love with the masses for a while. This is exactly why we stopped restricting infectious travellers during the ramp up to the AIDS crisis. If more are infected and maybe die the drug industry might do something about a fringe problem. Not a fringe anymore. Well played Barry. (and bubba, hillary, et al)
