Look whose photo graces the campus of UCLA, meant to be an inspiration to incoming students. The woman in the photo is standing above the slogan: “We Question.” On the right-hand side, in small letters, students are informed that they are “the optimists.”

This banner adds to the shadow that today is cast over so many of our major universities.

For those who can’t identify her, the photo depicts Angela Davis, the notorious former Communist Party USA leader who, beginning in the ’60s, molded together black nationalism with Marxism-Leninism. She created a heady brew for recruiting new cadre into the CP and the original Black Panther Party of Huey Newton.

You may be right that the folks in the administration wish they could have been there with Davis. I used to live next to a very liberal Gen X guy. He thought it would have been so cool to be in Berkeley back in the day. Having seen Berkeley in the mid 70s as a school girl and again in the late 80s in law school, I was glad to have missed it, but couldn’t get it across to him at all that the whole hippy era looked immature and unsavory, and not to be dreamy-eyed about.

Well, from my perspective CAL and UCLA are two ends of the same turd! They share the same POS “president” (Janet Nappy) and I’ll venture to say that both chancellors are also RAT crap weasels. I am at this time, ashamed to admit I graduated from UCB, although it was way back in 1965 when Jerry the Fairy’s father was laying waste to the Free Speech folks in Sproul Plaza with tear gas from a helicopter.

Yup, I’m a bit younger than you but not much....
I went to a JC first then transferred to UCLA for junior and senior years. My emphasis there was to party as much as possible...and I did.
While the same BS was evident at UCLA such as, I think I remember, Dr. Shockley, the inventor of the transistor, being a guest speaker but was run off because of his views on blacks. At the time, I only cared about the next kegger.
I did live next door to Bill Walton for a time...a big lib, protester, loadie.
I, too, keep my association w/ the institution under wraps but on the east coast, not much name recognition anyway. Got a phone call for a donation the other night. Big mistake for him as I had had 3 oz.s of tequila!
