A Northeast Ohio area teacher was on board the same plane that carried Amber Vinson, the Dallas nurse who travelled through Cleveland and was hours later diagnosed with Ebola virus. Two Solon schools announced that they will be closed on Thursday as a precaution after learning that a Solon Middle School staff member traveled home from Dallas on Frontier Airlines on Tuesday on a different flight, and an elementary teacher from Cleveland who confirmed contact with an Ebola infected person will be staying home from work until cleared by health officials to return to work.
Solon sent the following email to parents:
Solon Middle School and Parkside Elementary School will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, October 16, as a precaution. We learned today that an SMS staff member traveled home from Dallas on Frontier Airlines Tuesday on a different flight, but perhaps the same aircraft, as the Texas nurse with Ebola.
This circumstance came to light late in the day and we have been working since then to get as much information as possible from public health authorities. Although we believe what the science community and public health officials are telling us about the low risk of possible transmission of the virus through indirect contact, we are nonetheless taking the unusual step of closing the dual school building for Thursday so that we can have the schools cleaned and disinfected.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials were clear that they do not consider our staff member to be at risk since she did not come in direct contact with the Texas nurse and was not on the same flight. It is important to remember that Ebola is spread through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids...

Same aircraft, the virus survives dry on surfaces for days. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me to keep the teacher home for 21 days.
Also perfectly reasonable to shut down travel from infected countries like Liberia. At least common sense exists in flyover country.
How does closing for one day make any difference?
“Ebola is contagious, but it is not *that* contagious.” - G
How would you like to turn a doorknob that an ebola infected person turned 4 hours earlier?
Would you let your second grader turn that doorknob?
To me, the school is making exactly the correct decision.
There are pretty good chances to keep this under control.

I agree.....**if***.....standard the practices,( known for more than 100 years) for containing highly contagious diseases controls are used.
Do I trust those in government to use these highly effective practices? No, I don’t. So far, their response has been beyond believable except it is happen right before our eyes.
That’s a little over the top. Send them home. Lock the doors. But they, under no one’s calculations, would be contagious yet.
Closing the school(s) is going to cause some panic.
Ebola is going to be a drag on the economy. The cost is going to be enormous, whether the death toll is small or large.

All part of the plan....
Please do some reading on this issue. There are plenty of books, articles, and essays. They are all online. They range from information in the 70’s through last week.
Your assumptions are incorrect. You are spreading fear. What you are doing is akin to yelling “witch” in the 17th century.
Please educate yourself somewhere else than FR. The masses here are good at finding articles and you should read them. But folks here make stupid comments that are dangerous.
A leftist troll? I suggest you check a FReeper’s posting history before making such outlandish charges.
Don’t you think it makes more sense if we disagree without attacking one another?
Sounds like a solid leftist plan. The Rats’ October Surprise?
Or fluid that comes out of our lungs...the expelled mist...
That’s not how this works.
Once you are symptomatic you might have one day of mobility. Then you are down. You are projectile vomiting the lining of your stomach. And you are explosively releasing your bowels. The lining of your colon sloths off and you literally crap yourself inside out.
If you are dying from ebola you are not coming into contact with anyone but your caregiver.
Obama=Ebola=drag on economy.
Obama=Democrats
Democrats=Ebola=drag on economy.
Patrick Sawyer was spewing blood from at least two orifices. He infected and killed the woman next to him in the plane and the flight attendants who were forced to clean up. Nobody else in the plane was infected. We also have the fact that Youngor Jallah and her family (ages 2, 4, 6) did not get infected even though they were wandering around in Duncan's apartment. The clear conclusion is that virus laden fluids are deadly but those come late in the disease.
20 people, 8 died. He was Liberian-American, not Nigerian. He was dying and spewing viruses everywhere at that point.
The apartment Duncan was in presumably had plenty of doorknobs, faucets, etc which he had touched after vomiting and diarrhea. Nobody else got infected. Probably some luck, but also a very low risk,
The CDC doesn't evaluate actual risks, they simply issue dictums (or fail to do so) based on political whims. There is no risk to anyone on the plane, but they were forced to issue the order anyway. In contrast the woman who tested Duncan and cleaned up the mess he left was not quarantined or even contacted.
I voted absentee. Check the requirements for this in your state. Do it asap... There is probably still time to get the process going.....in OH we need to apply and then wait for the materials to come via USPS.
Please encourage others to do this.

So, are you saying you would let your second grader turn that knob?
