California has had universal background checks since (IIRC) the 1920s. Hey, how’s that curbed gun violence out there? Oh, wait, it hasn’t.

There are no private sales in CA, all person to person transactions must go through a dealer intermediary (with background check) to be legal.

It basically has done nothing to curb gun crime, violence or even homicide there.

Many states have had universal background checks on firearms since the Jim Crow days. It hasn’t helped. Cho, the Virginia Tech shooter, passed not only the Federal background check but a Virginia State Police background check. That didn’t help either; in fact, most of the recent mass shooters passed background checks.
