Americans should be "deeply skeptical" of government power, says FBI Director James Comey, adding that law enforcement should be able to access someone's telephone only with a court order,
"I believe that Americans should be deeply skeptical of government power," Comey told CBS News' Scott Pelley in an interview for "60 Minutes" that will air on Sunday. "You cannot trust people in power.
"The Founders knew that," he said. "Thats why they divided power among three branches, to set interest against interest."
Comey, 53, who became FBI chief in September 2013, cautioned that courts must grant law-enforcement agencies permission to telephones if the information is deemed to be critical to a criminal case or national security.

SHADES of the power of Hoover and his “files”..ha.
<>”The Founders knew that,” he said. “Thats why they divided power among three branches, to set interest against interest.”<>
Yes, that is true. However, what was more important than horizontal division of power was the vertical, represented in a senate of the states.
Justices? No, man. The three branches are the house, the senate and the president. Chucky S. said so.
I hope so too... Thank God there are still people willing to speak up...
Thank you FBI Director James Comey...
Just read the rest of the article, this snibbit is just to offset his objection to legal technology that Washington has yet to crack.
“”The notion that we would market devices that would allow someone to place themselves beyond the law, troubles me a lot,” Comey said. “As a country, I dont know why we would want to put people beyond the law.”
Indeed his whole concept of “We as a country” being the seller of things rather than the individual makers as well as the implication that we should not be able to make something without a Federal Government back door makes the man sound very much like he’s of Obama’s ‘government knows best’ ideology after all.
In the end he knows very well at the end of the day Washington has never had too much trouble finding and appointing employees who will effectively rubber stamp just about whatever power they want. That the so called ‘checks and balances’ really aren’t competing for much beyond a greater share of power from the hands of the people.
Even among themselves his own apointer has demonstrated a very appt ability to do what he wants regardless of the objections of the legislator. Just as the Federal Employees in black robes have demonstrated themselves effectively dictators in all things ABOVE the written text and history of the Federal Constitution.
I guess its a good thing to to thank people for the true halfs of their statement.
The other half of FBI Director James Comey’s statement and the overall point he was making is against the idea of there being devises without back-doors for the Government.
The man clearly things we should just hand to Washington our Secretes whenever their employees tell us to. A rather interesting application of the non-existence 5th Amendment to the equally pointless Federal Constitution.
Dude read the rest of the article, this man is an Obama idiot that thinks people shouldn’t be able to sell devises that don’t have back doors for the Federal government.
“”The notion that we would market devices that would allow someone to place themselves beyond the law, troubles me a lot,” Comey said. “As a country, I dont know why we would want to put people beyond the law.”
Im sorry FBI Director James Comey, but my devises have every right to take the 5th amendment along with me.
He took over an agency that has been running roughshod over the 4th Amendment for a while now. It was some other DOJ entity that got nailed for GPS tracker use, but the FBI was very active in putting trackers on vehicles without warrants.
How did an honest man weasel his way into this cess pit of charlatans, crooks, liars, thieves, druggies and perverts?
“Everyone has something to hide.” Sam Spade.
Yep, you just made me go back and read the whole article and it ‘does’ change the perspective! So owning an Apple phone that no one else can intrude on troubles him a lot!!
Wouldn’t that be awesome. Maybe he could be the key to getting Obama to step down. I can dream, can’t I?
Just looking for any light in the darkness here, but this may not be it. Right? It’s on right now.
You assume that your data will be presented objectively, when in reality, it would be skewed to fit the meme. You are not safe either.
It is not possible for me to be any more skeptical. I reached that point decades ago.
and indeed I am
I should have finished reading... thanks for sharing...
