Smart-meter foes voice their outrage [ Durango, Colorado ]

LPEA customers oppose upcharge for visiting homes.. La Plata Electric Association

...

A frequent comment was the impression that the switch from analog to Advanced Metering Infrastructure – or so-called smart meters – that started in late 2013 was done without informing customers.

Several people said they learned about smart meters from neighbors or only because they were at home when an LPEA technician arrived to switch out the analog meter.

The alleged secrecy eroded public trust, they said.

About 300 LPEA customers have chosen not to have the latest meter-reading technology installed.

A number of speakers cited health problems, which they said started as soon a smart meter was installed.

One speaker pledged to bring a class-action lawsuit; another invoked United Nations Agenda 21, often cited as a threat to local rule or a plan to impose strict gun control; several said LPEA is in the pocket of General Electric, which manufactures smart meters; a number said imposing a fee on recalcitrant customers is extortion.

...

Sixty-two people attended a similar listening session Wednesday in Pagosa Springs, which reportedly was more confrontational.

so far in Texas the only thing smart about the meters is how Oncor got the PUCT to agree that customers should pay for them.

Oh, and they did get some Obama shovel ready money also.

Oh, they got to let go the meter readers.

That was smart.

I asked the guy that changed out my meter if it was a smart meter and he lied and said no. Actually the old meter was on something that sounded like he said Turtle system. The meter reported the reading to a substation so the meter only had to be checked once or twice a year to check the calibration. The new meters have radio signal that has to have a data system of small devices that report to a central device to send the usage data to billing and who know what else. It looks like the new system is less secure and easily damaged.

The new electric meters have radio signals that can report every minute ?

Tracking us 24/7 on water use with smart water meters, too.

I had my smart meter removed and replaced with an old analog type. I now have to pay an extra $10 per month for not having the smart meter. Sucks.

I had a tussle when a water meter guy came to our house to install a smart meter.

I was in bed sick and my husband let the guy in. I swore at him, jumped out of bed and went down the stairs hacking from the bottom of my soul - and I had a CRAZY gross cough going - I asked the guy if he was installing a smart meter, and he wouldn’t give me a straight answer.

Claimed ours wasn’t working - bull - and so I told him that I had a chronic health condition requiring med equipment which my doctor had advised me would be disrupted by a smart meter. Then I let loose with another batch of horrid coughs. He told me he didn’t want my flu, and I responded that he “couldn’t get what I had”. I told it it was a symptom of my condition and then coughed and coughed until he literally RAN out of the door.

When I called the water co to have the old meter reset, the new guy that came informed me that the last guy had cut the wire on the outside of the house! So, he fixed it and reinstalled our old meter which he said worked just fine.

So, yes I lied about medical equipment. Sue me. They lied about my meter being broken in order to instal a spy meter. I had heard that the new meters DO interfere with certain med equipment and health conditions, so I used that excuse to keep my old meter.

In my state, they were supposed to notify before installing - and I had signed and delivered my statement (their form) to remind them of that.

Yet, one day, my dog set up a holler that someone was in the yard.

I took a look and found a meter man with a new Smart meter under his arm, headed for my back yard.

When questioned, he said: “I’m here to put your Smart meter on.”

I said: “No, you’re not.”

He eyes popped a b it and he said: “Yes, I.m going to install this meter.”

I said: “No you are NOT - and this is NOT a conversation. You take your Smart meter and yourself off my property now.”

He went.

then I called the elect. co and told them they’d better mark my account for NO SMART METER - and see that no one tries again - or I’ll see them in court...

That was almost 2 years ago. I pay a $12 “Punishment Fine” every month - and so mark it on my payment checks.

They don’t like that. They say “It’s a fee, not a fine.”

I say: “No. A fee is something you pay for something you GET. A FINE is assessed against you for NOT doing something.”

My meter is on the opposite side of the wall from the head of my bed. No way they’re putting their box that RADIATES a good 6’ out, that close to my head...

I had a “saver switch” on my air conditioning compressor that allowed the power company to disconnect my compressor for 20 minute intervals during peak usage. The switch was on the air conditioner when I bought the house. In exchange for interrupting my compressor I was to get a few bucks credit on my bill. Initially I saw a small credit during very hot summers, but stopped getting these credits for years and forgot about the switch. I came home from work one day two years and had a note on my door that the “saver switch” had been replaced. I called the power company and raised hell that they had installed this switch on my equipment without my express consent and I even filed a complaint with the state public utility commission. After a lot of phone calls I finally got the switch removed. In comparing my electric bills I found that my air conditioner was actually running less without this “saver switch”. I could never get an answer from the power company about how much additional control this switch gave them over using my air conditioner. For example could they arbitrarily shut off my cooling just because they said I didn't need cooling that day.

Duh, you’re right! Here’s the research.

http://stopsmartmeters.org/frequently-asked-questions/faq-health-issues/

“Sleep in a different room if it is further from the meter; leave your home or stay with a friend for a while (if they don’t have a “smart” meter); or change where you habitually spend time in the house. Remove other sources of EMF from your living environment (microwave ovens, cordless and cell phones, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, baby monitors, wifi routers, etc.) You could also try turning off your electricity at the breaker (put ice packs in your fridge to keep it cold). Monitor your health to see if these changes help you feel better.

Try camping or backpacking in an area away from electricity, cell towers, and smart meters. Many people discover that they feel normal again when they remove themselves from EMF’s for a couple of days. Take off your shoes and socks and walk around in dirt or on the grass barefoot- this helps to “ground” you.”

Story Highlights
A review of fire investigation files reveals smart meter fires may be more widespread than reported.
Fire chiefs say nine fires have started in smart meters in Reno and Sparks. One killed a woman.
NV Energy deny that the smart meters cause the fire, even if that’s where the blaze originated.
The Public Utilities Commission has been asked to investigate whether smart meters pose a fire danger.

Pat Ponder and her dogs were sitting on the porch of her Sparks home on a mild November afternoon two years ago when she heard a sudden loud popping noise.

“I looked over and the meter was on fire,” Ponder, 70, said. “It scared me to death. It scared my dogs.”

The same people who complain about smart meters causing health problems undoubtedly have no problems using their cell phones. They both use similar frequencies although the meter puts out a bit more power (0.25W versus 0.1 or less) the smart meter antenna is much farther away than the cell phone antenna.

Anyone who has concerns about smart meters, please ask. I’ve been designing them since 1997, water, electric, gas. No, they don’t spy on your sex life. No, they don’t irradiate your gonads. No, they don’t cause cancer.

Just got a notice in west Michigan that they will be installing these. I’m not so much concerned except if it can be used to ration electricity, in other words, if they can remotely turn your electric on or off. Do you know?
