I can’t see doctors and nurses talking about their big story to each other, it seems like it would have been dominating conversations for weeks, and especially when they are personally a part of the story.

I shouldn't make light of the tragedy of ebola… but I will. Imagine using just the threat of it to your advantage. Walk in a dangerous neighborhood and when the thugs try to rob you, cough horribly and tell them you think you have ebola - they'll leave you alone. Got people crowding you and bumping into you? Cough horribly and say "my damn ebola is getting to me". Heck, I don't think a swat team will converge on you - nobody wants close contact with a possibly infected person.
