Three days after a fatal case of Marburg hemorrhagic fever was diagnosed in Uganda, 99 people have been quarantined in four different locations across the East African country, as field epidemiologists and surveillance officers continue to closely monitor all people who got into contact with only victim.

More than 60 health workers form the bulk of people under quarantine after they were identified as having contact with a 30-year old male health worker who died September 28 of Marburg -- an Ebola-like hemorrhagic fever.

"As of today, a total of 99 contacts are under follow up. All the contacts are still in a healthy condition," Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, director general for health services in Uganda, said in the latest update on the outbreak on Tuesday.

"The National Taskforce through the field epidemiologists and surveillance officers continues to closely monitor all people who got into contact with this confirmed case," she noted.

Meh, why should Ebola have all the fun?

Africa is the Anus of Earth. Is there any doubt?

I was reading an article the other day, okay, I’m no doctor but it’s either marburg is in the same family as ebola or both of them are often called marburg hemorrhagic and ebola hemorrhagic.

Yes, Marburg and Ebola are both Filoviruses. They both cause hemmorhagic fever.

Marburg is so named because it first appeared in the East German city of Marburg in the late 60’s, (I think). It’s suspected that the Soviets imported the virus from Africa and were trying to create a bio-weapon when it infected Dr. Ustinov in the city of Marburg. Hence, the name.

Africa is a cesspool of deadly viruses. They are nurtured by rampant ignorance and cultural mores. If they start now it will take generations to overcome.

The task is made far more difficult if you look at average national IQ scores.

Here are a few samples, rankings on the left:

16 Sierra Leone 91
23 Nigeria 84
25 Zimbabwe 82
28 Zambia 79
29 Congo, Democratic Republic of the 78
31 Mauritania 76
31 Senegal 76
32 Mali 74
32 Namibia 74
33 Ghana 73
34 Tanzania 72
35 Central African Republic 71
36 Benin 70
36 Botswana 70
36 Rwanda 70
36 Togo 70
37 Burundi 69
37 Cote d'Ivoire 69
37 Ethiopia 69
37 Malawi 69
37 Niger 69
38 Angola 68
38 Burkina Faso 68
38 Chad 68
38 Djibouti 68
38 Somalia 68
38 Swaziland 68
39 Lesotho 67
39 Liberia 67
41 Cameroon 64
41 Gabon 64
41 Mozambique 64

I am not sure how you resolve this.

Here’s a link for ‘ya:

Ebola and Marburg are separate viruses although both are in the Filoviridae family of viruses. Symptoms are similar.

By the way, go to the “The Diseases” tab on the link above & it lists all the hemorrhagic fevers (w/links to info) & a lot of other bad stuff as well:

The Hemorrhagic Fevers
Hantaviruses
Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever
Rift Valley Fever
Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever
Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever
Lassa Hemorrhagic Fever
American Hemorrhagic Fevers

And as Marburg showed up first (in Marburg Germany in the 1960s) shouldn’t be be saying Ebola has Marburg-like symptoms?

Marburg is West Germany, perhaps you were thinking of Magdeburg. So that little cold war anecdote falls flat. Why not just look up the real story on Wikipedia?

Hmmm, I guess you’re right - but I do remember reading something that said they were trying to smuggle it to East Germany and then Russia. I can’t remember...

I guess an industrial accident is OK for a so-so TV thriller; but cold war, Russians smuggling a virus, etc. - now we’re talking James Bond level! ;-)
