The other interesting piece in that article is the CDC claiming they are out of the ZMapp medicine they successfully used on the two in Atlanta last month.

Apparently that medicine is grown via some type of mutated tobacco plant and takes weeks (months) to grow. So even if that works, we evidently are screwed since there have been no announcements of trying to mass produce it.

We were out of the serums on the first two patients. There were only 3 to begin with.

It's a small scale process for research. zmapp isn't suitable for mass production or distribution. Use was permitted as a "Hail Mary" test where the recipient was expected to die without any effective treatment. He got lucky. It does take months to get enough mouse antibody against ebola antigen fragments.

Japan has 20,000 doses of a similar drug used to “cure” a person in France. They are willing to share with others besides France, but so far it’s not even being discussed here.

I am thinking that if someone rich, famous, and/or connected gets it, there will be a way for them to get it from Japan. I sure wish more reports on this would hit the news, maybe then they’d all get tickets to Japan or France, who might have sensible quarantine measures too.
