“downgraded to critical”

Shouldn’t a downgrade in his condition mean he’s getting better? Isn’t critical worse than serious?

No. Upgraded to “serious”, “stable”, “good”.
Downgraded to “critical.”

If your (or your country’s) credit score is downgraded, that’s bad. If it’s upgraded, that’s good.

Same concept.

Yep, I think next is “grave”, then you’re actually in the grave.

Yes, medically “downgrade” means it’s getting worse, the opposite of when people say “we are downgrading the threat” means it’s less serious. That’s really a problem with English. Kind of how “third degree” assault, for example, is the least violent, but “third degree” burns are the worst.

The scale is status of "health condition." As health condition deteriorates, status is downgraded.

Sad situation for the patient, his loved ones, and the health care provider community. Keep them in your prayers.
