A new poll out Wednesday from Suffolk University and USA Today confirms something we kind of already knew: Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) is in a remarkable amount of trouble. The poll shows independent Greg Orman leading Roberts 46 percent to 41 percent with Democrat Chad Taylor now off the ballot.
It has plenty of bad news for Roberts, but also some reasons to believe his goose isn't cooked just yet. Below, we're recapping three ominous signs for Roberts, and three reasons for hope. (And it all comes with the caveat that one poll shouldn't be taken as gospel.)
First, the storm clouds:
1) He is behind, period.
The only other Senate incumbents who have trailed by as much as five points in a poll are Sens. Mark Pryor , Mary Landrieu and Mark Begich . And there are less than five weeks left in the campaign i.e. not a ton of time.
2) His favorable rating 39 percent is lower than President Obama's 41 percent.
Ouch. That said, this is where Obama's mother is from, so there might be same nostalgia for that. His approval rating, for example, is five points lower, at 36 percent. And Roberts's unfavorable rating and disapproval ratings are both lower than Obama's. Still, the fact that Roberts is in the same ballpark as Obama in ruby-red Kansas is telling.
Also telling: Roberts's approval rating among Republicans is just 50 percent, with 36 percent disapproving. Clearly, there are lingering effects from his sub-50-percent primary showing.
3) Roberts earns the support of just 61 percent of Republicans
It's 61-30 Roberts among GOPers. If he's going to win, that needs to change plain and simple. An incumbent, even in a state like Kansas, can't win while ceding that much of his party's vote.

Wolfe did close ranks and everyone from Palin to Carson to Cruz is headed to Kansas to try to knock this fake independent out of the ring. Kansas, please - try try try not to screw this up.
I see that you agree with the Washington Post. Good for you.
Time for a negotiation. What are the RNC power brokers going to give constitutional conservatives to get our support? For starters, maybe Roberts could talk to his Senate buddy, Cochran, SOON, about dropping out and the nomination going to McDaniel. How about a DEFINITIVE statement from the RNC to support with-holding funding for all Obama initiatives if he does any more executive orders to enable the invasion of the US?
Don't blame constitutional conservatives for the mess the RINO elitists created in DC!
I blame conservatives who vote for and support Democrats because the are mad at Republicans. I understand the latter, I think that the former is insane.
I don’t think the polls show the fact that a lot of democrats are depressed and simply will not turn out.
I’m looking forward to your refutation of the Romney Kansas landslide as not indicative of a deep red state.
Or, I’ll continue to think of you as an idiot worth ignoring.
Thanks for your insightful and well researched comments. Come again soon.

DEEEEEEEEEP Red. Idiot.
It seems to be a frequently used tactic for the dems in recent years.
They will put a “libertarian” or “independent” on the ballot for what’s expected to be a close race, or in a conservative area, hoping to draw votes away from the Republican and tip the election to the Dems. I saw it repeatedly in 2010 in VA, and it damn near worked in a couple of House races that I can think of off hand. The “3rd Party” candidate took what would have been a comfortable margin of victory for the republican, and made them close races. They’re doing it in NC for the Senate race this year, and they’re obviously doing it in Kansas as well.
The funny thing about Kansas is the dems are apparently so unpopular, they take a democrat and run him as an “independent”, and of course the voters are stupid enough to fall for it! I’d like to think citizens of an otherwise dependable “red state” would be smarter than that.....

Idiot.
I've been a loyal CONSERVATIVE Republican since my days as a YAF campus officer and delegate in the mid 1960s. The party left me. If the RNC and our elected officials don't get their act together, the nation is going down anyway. Might as well let the dems figure out the mess.
The bridge too far was establishment support of the disgusting Cochran campaign against McDaniel. It's now obvious the Republican elitists care more about defeating conservatives than about defeating Democrats.
I don't think that Roberts is one of the really bad guys that needs to be defeated. I don't trust candidates like Wolfe who have no voting record but want to step right into the US Senate. But I do think the arrogance of Roberts not even maintaining a residence in his state represents a lot of what's wrong with the DC crowd.
Get it? It's not quite a divorce yet, it's a separation. If the Republicans aren't going to be constitutional conservatives, constitutional conservatives aren't going to be Republican!
End of rant (grrr.......)
I see that you are misinformed about Kansas. (See posts, above.)
Considering Kansas is your home state and you are ignorant about it, I continue to consider you an Idiot.
Or, maybe you're just Karl Rove.
“Or, Ill continue to think of you as an idiot worth ignoring.”
The GOPe has been treating conservatives that way for quite a while now. People who think “not-democrat” is a synonym with “conservative” prove them right.
I don’t live in Kansas, don’t know the details of the race. But the arguments on fr come down to “not-democrat”, “more conservative”... I haven’t hard anything conservative that Roberts stands for... just that he is more “severely conservative” than his opponent. If that is the best he can do, then he deserves to lose.
“”Orman contributed in 2007 to Democratic Senator Harry Reid, in 2008 to Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s campaigns””
I guess you think he will grow in office.
Boy, you sure know how to set the bait for the SAVE HARRY REID movement on FR!

The GOPe got their man in Kansas.
Mr. centurion can get Karl Rove and the Chamber of Commerce to come riding to the Roberts’ rescue with both of their volunteers. I’m sure that’ll swing the race.
Shut up and win with what you’ve got, GOPe, or go home as the LOSERS that you are.
That’s more love than conservatives get from you. LOSERS.
The exception (Sebelius) proving the rule.
