Parents of daughter Isis: ‘Stop using her name for Islamic State’

The Australian parents of an 8-year-old girl named Isis say that people used to comment on their daughter’s beautiful name.

Now, people shudder when they hear Isis’s name as it is the acronym most commonly used for the jihadist group ISIS (shorthand for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) that has become known for barbaric beheadings.

Frank and Sheridan Leskien of Sydney appeared on the Australian TV show Today to ask the media and public to “leave our daughter’s name alone.”

The Leskiens named their daughter after the ancient Egyptian goddess who was worshipped “as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patroness of nature and magic.”

“It’s a beautiful name,” Mr. Leskien told the British Daily Mail. “We spent so long choosing it.”

You named your daughter after an Egyptian goddess. The name “Isis” is not yours.

I would like to take this moment, though, to point out that choosing a name, even of a terrorist organization, is fraught with peril. Take for example the terrorist organization, formed in 1978, known as the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

The members of MILF were not pleased by the release of the film “American Pie”.
