Anti-gay baker Melissa Klein openly cried at the Values Voter Summit last week over the forced closing of her business due to backlash stemming from her refusal to make a cake for a lesbian couple's wedding.
In January 2013, Sweet Cakes By Melissa refused service to a lesbian couple looking for a wedding cake. The subsequent fallout included national media attention and a state investigation for anti-gay discrimination -- perpetuated by the Kleins' continued actions, such as baking cakes for an "ex-gay" group.
The couple is now reportedly fighting a $150,000 lawsuit from the state, a reality that made Klein break into tears while discussing her passion for the process of baking wedding cakes during the Values Voter Summit.
"For me personally when I would sit down with them, I just would want to know everything about her wedding," an emotional Klein told the audience. "I'd want to know about the flowers, her dress, the centerpieces, her colors, the way her hair is going to be. I would even want to talk about 'where are you going on your honeymoon?'"

For all this to be occurring right here in America is just mind-boggling. It’s like a curtain of evil has descended over the country. America is not just losing its freedoms, but also losing its complete moral authority.
The backlash was actually a well-organized campaign of harassment using the instruments of state power to deprive her of her most basic human freedoms.
Your analogy to a “bust of Hitler” ordered from a Jewish sculptor or a ham sandwich from a Muslim deli owner is not a fair one.
This is not about WHAT you make — it about is for WHOM. Civil rights laws for 50+ years have firmly held that businesses can pick their products, but they don’t have the freedom of conscience to pick their customers. In other words, a Muslim doesn’t have to make a ham sandwich, but if chooses to make turkey sandwiches, he can’t refuse to sell them to a Jew who walks in and orders one.
You can argue that there should be no civil rights laws applicable to private businesses, and you can argue that homosexuals should not have civil rights protections, but you can’t argue that existing civil rights laws are being invidiously applied as long as gays are granted protection under them.
The repression has already begun, we need to remind people of that.
This woman deserves our support and respect. Personally, I want her to dry her tears and counter sue the people who ruined her. They started this and she has rights.

Jewish sculptor has a sign saying they make custom busts from any photograph... Can a KKK Kreep or NeoNazi walk in there and order “A Custom Bust” then?
Can a homosexual couple walk into a Muslim Owned Cake shop and demand that they make a Wedding cake for them? How about an Orthodox Jewish ran bakery?
Also you forgot a LOT of the Civil Right issues inthe 50’s and 60’s was to fight Discrimination BY THE STATE and LOCAL governments. Sure there were some businessses that were insane and dicriminated, but a LOT of the discrimination in the south was government directed.
There is a big difference between not serving something you already have on the menu or a premade product and refusing to do a contracted out job because it violates a person’s religious and/or cultural standards.
These homo-fascists are truly no better than Nazis. And they deserve the same fate as the Nazis.
Seeing all this happening on American soil is the kind of thing I never would have conceived of, years ago. But of course, I never expected to see America itself sink so far down into the depths of cultural depravity.
To make things worse, they keep saying she "broke the law" and should just deal with it.
Since when is there a "law" that you must at your own expense and sweat of your brow make a CUSTOM cake that violates you religious beliefs?
She didn't refuse to serve this lesbian couple, she just wouldn't "dance monkey dance" when they ordered her to create a SPECIAL cake.
They could have anything else offered on the menu.
Not good enough.
And the analogy of walking into a kosher or halal restaurant and asking for a BLT is EXACTLY apt.
Yes, they could "theoretically" make it, but it's not on the menu.
I don't think that gays really "grasp" what is going to happen with this kind of nonsense.
The first step is to ridicule those who aren’t going with the proper political group think. The next step is to assign onerous taxes & fines to those who won’t fall in line with proper thinking. This always leads to where the left always goes, the prison camp or hand dug trench hidden in the woods to purge the new society of the reactionary elements that prevent utopia.
A Jewish shop can certainly refuse to make a bust of Hitler — for anyone.
A Muslim- or Orthodox Jewish-owned baker certainly CANNOT refuse to make a gay wedding cake in places where civil rights laws extend to gays. If gays choose to let Muslims or Orthodox Jews discriminate against them, that’s the gays’ problem. It doesn’t give impunity to the Christians.
I certainly don’t forget that much civil rights laws were about the government’s discriminatory conduct. However, that’s an entirely separate analysis from the civil rights laws applicable to private persons and businesses, and the extension of those laws in this context are quite clear.
Executive summary — Christian business people who believed there would be any sort of “conscience” exception to gay rights laws were stupid to think so.
Did the baker at any time say: "we don't serve cakes to YOUR kind"?
NO!
Here is our menu. I'll make a cake for you. Here are the options...
"I want a snozzberry iced cake with a penis topper, plus a couple of swastikas on the side."
Well, we don't really support that kind of thing. And if you look at the catalogue you'll see we don't even have snozzberries or black icing for swastikas.
"Whaaaah! Discrimination!"
Find a gay biz and make them cater to a conservative cause. Fight fire with fire.
Define that, please.
Is it a cake just like every other cake in the catalogue?
If so, then fine, discrimination.
BTW, why CAN'T a Jewish shop refuse to make a Hitler cake?
Tell me the legal reason that they shouldn't be forced to, yet a Christian baker SHOULD.
Notice they never used this “you broke the law!” defense in Lawrence Vs. Texas. They were all for tearing down laws then.
Usually I rationalize the notion that we should not follow the Biblical Mosaic Law, (i.e. stoning homosexuals to death), with the argument that we are not living in a theocracy, but rather a free Republic (even if founded on Judeo-Christian values.)
Smarmy, smug articles like this make me reconsider.
As in the days of Noah and Lot. . . . if there is a website for donations, please let me know. She knows what the ultimate end of the story is. . . .she wins. . . .because of her faith. The perverted winners of today. .. will be the ultimate losers of tomorrow and it won’t be pretty. http://www.patburt.com/
From an older generation who could never quite accept open blatant homosexuality, I adopted a live and let live philosophy. It is easier that way.
I would think that certain people like these two, will only breed fear. Fear that may turn to hate. Too bad there is not a support fund. I am good for a 100 dollars.
She’s not anti-gay, she pro-freedom of thought/association aka pro-choice.
Well, what if a bakery makes holy matrimony cakes. It doesn't make gay wedding cakes. If a gay couple walks in and has set a date for holy matrimony in a church, they can buy a cake. Until then, they can't buy a holy matrimony cake; and the baker doesn't do civil wedding cakes.
