I’m certainly no expert on what took place, but it seems to me that those compounds would have served as barracks as well as meeting places. It would seem to me that you could catch a sizable number of people in one place if they were sleeping on site.

In a traditional warfare situation yes they would be. However, in the current 4th generation warfare they operate mostly at night under cover of darkness for their planting of roadside bombs, sabotage, etc. So in context, what would have been there at night most likely was their family, etc. and not the actual ones it is claimed he’s targeting.
