Before the Archies, there were the Cuff Links. This was Ron Dante, one of the last survivors of the Brill Building era, with a studio band that had one hit. It was released by Decca to take advantage of the success of “Sugar Sugar”.

#40 – Cass Elliot: “It’s Getting Better”

Miriam Cohen, a.k.a. Cassandra Elliot, or Mama Cass, was the one survivor of the Mamas & the Papas who had a successful solo career because of her amazing voice. She died in 1973 from a heart attack, not from a ham sandwich.

#4 – Three Dog Night: “Easy to Be Hard”

I’ve told the story of how I interviewed James Rado and Gerome Ragni, who were two of the three men behind “Hair”. Rado was a nice guy, but Ragni liked to push people’s buttons. He gave me a lot of trouble because of my ROTC uniform.

Songs from “Hair” were all over the charts in the summer of 1969, and this was one of the biggest.
