Second, it is time for the world especially Muslim communities to explicitly, forcefully, and consistently reject the ideology of al Qaeda and ISIL. As if they knew he would say this today (did they?), an international group of Muslim scholars today issued a purported refutation of the Islamic States understanding of Islam. Unfortunately, it is yet another farrago of detours, deceptions, half-truths and outright falsehoods. Will Muslim communities ever really reject the ideology of al Qaeda and the Islamic State? They havent yet in any way that would make even one jihadist lay down his arms and become a moderate.
More fantasy and wishful thinking from Obama: Full text of President Obamas 2014 address to the United Nations General Assembly, Washington Post, September 24, 2014:
I have made it clear that America will not base our entire foreign policy on reacting to terrorism. Rather, we have waged a focused campaign against al Qaeda and its associated forces taking out their leaders, and denying them the safe-havens they rely upon. At the same time, we have reaffirmed that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. Islam teaches peace. Muslims the world over aspire to live with dignity and a sense of justice. And when it comes to America and Islam, there is no us and them there is only us, because millions of Muslim Americans are part of the fabric of our country.
So we reject any suggestion of a clash of civilizations. Belief in permanent religious war is the misguided refuge of extremists who cannot build or create anything, and therefore peddle only fanaticism and hate. And it is no exaggeration to say that humanitys future depends on us uniting against those who would divide us along fault lines of tribe or sect; race or religion .
No God condones this terror. No grievance justifies these actions. There can be no reasoning no negotiation with this brand of evil. The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force. So the United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death .
Second, it is time for the world especially Muslim communities to explicitly, forcefully, and consistently reject the ideology of al Qaeda and ISIL.
It is the task of all great religions to accommodate devout faith with a modern, multicultural world. No children anywhere should be educated to hate other people. There should be no more tolerance of so-called clerics who call upon people to harm innocents because they are Jewish, Christian or Muslim. It is time for a new compact among the civilized peoples of this world to eradicate war at its most fundamental source: the corruption of young minds by violent ideology .
That means bringing people of different faiths together. All religions have been attacked by extremists from within at some point, and all people of faith have a responsibility to lift up the value at the heart of all religion: do unto thy neighbor as you would have done unto you.
The ideology of ISIL or al Qaeda or Boko Haram will wilt and die if it is consistently exposed, confronted, and refuted in the light of day. Look at the new Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies Sheikh bin Bayyah described its purpose: We must declare war on war, so the outcome will be peace upon peace. Look at the young British Muslims, who responded to terrorist propaganda by starting the notinmyname campaign, declaring ISIS is hiding behind a false Islam. Look at the Christian and Muslim leaders who came together in the Central African Republic to reject violence listen to the Imam who said, Politics try to divide the religious in our country, but religion shouldnt be a cause of hate, war, or strife.
Third, we must address the cycle of conflict especially sectarian conflict that creates the conditions that terrorists prey upon.
There is nothing new about wars within religions. Christianity endured centuries of vicious sectarian conflict. Today, it is violence within Muslim communities that has become the source of so much human misery. It is time to acknowledge the destruction wrought by proxy wars and terror campaigns between Sunni and Shia across the Middle East. And it is time that political, civic and religious leaders reject sectarian strife. Lets be clear: this is a fight that no one is winning. A brutal civil war in Syria has already killed nearly 200,000 people and displaced millions. Iraq has come perilously close to plunging back into the abyss. The conflict has created a fertile recruiting ground for terrorists who inevitably export this violence .
My fourth and final point is a simple one: the countries of the Arab and Muslim world must focus on the extraordinary potential of their people especially the youth.
Here Id like to speak directly to young people across the Muslim world. You come from a great tradition that stands for education, not ignorance; innovation, not destruction; the dignity of life, not murder. Those who call you away from this path are betraying this tradition, not defending it .
Israelis not Palestinians are ready to abandon the hard work of peace:
Leadership will also be necessary to address the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis. As bleak as the landscape appears, America will never give up the pursuit of peace. The situation in Iraq, Syria and Libya should cure anyone of the illusion that this conflict is the main source of problems in the region; for far too long, it has been used in part as a way to distract people from problems at home. And the violence engulfing the region today has made too many Israelis ready to abandon the hard work of peace. But lets be clear: the status quo in the West Bank and Gaza is not sustainable. We cannot afford to turn away from this effort not when rockets are fired at innocent Israelis, or the lives of so many Palestinian children are taken from us in Gaza. So long as I am President, we will stand up for the principle that Israelis, Palestinians, the region, and the world will be more just with two states living side by side, in peace and security .
Another fantasy. That will never happen, because the Palestinians' jihad imperative will not allow it to happen.
True enough :)
Islam does teach peace. It is just that their definition is different from ours. Opposite in fact.
You got to the real truth of the question of whether Islam is a religion of peace or not.
If the Moslems didn’t have Jews/Israelis, Christians, and other religious minorities to target for extermination or dhimmitude, they’d be AND ARE killing each other over which Islamic movement (i.e. Wahaddi, Shiite, Sunni, Sufi, etc). is the TRUE ISLAM.
SO if Islam is “a religion of peace”, then why is this internecine slaughter taking place within the Islamic world.
I know that the jihadist coveruppers like CAIR, MSA, ICNA, etc. will say that only one group is the TRUE Islam practitioner, while all the others are malformed versions or even blasphermers.
Obama is a political/ideological Marxist, but a covert Islamist in religious and spiritual thought.
Instead of the old “Watermelon” ideologues, “Green on the outside, Red on the Inside”, Obama is a “Mildewed Watermelon”, “Black mildew for Islam on top of the Green of the environmental wacko leftists, covering up his deeply held RED Marxist core”.
If there is any doubt about my contention, reread this new UN speech and see who the villains of the world are today, starting with the US in Ferguson, MO. No criticism of Iran, No. Korea, Russia, Red China, the Wahhabists, Moslem Brotherhood, Islamic jihadists (who killed an innocent French citizen in Algeria today).
Obama is NOT “an enigma wrapped in a mystery”. He is a communist wrapped in a burqua with flowers in his hair.
I like it!
Of course, Barry, you're right again. For example, the States of "Al-Aska" and "Al-Abama" were originally founded by 12th Century Islamic colonists.
Its Time to Take the Islamic State Seriously (Excellent Analysis!)
Crisis Magazine ^ | September 23, 2014 | REV. JAMES V. SCHALL, S.J.
Islam has no central or definitive body or figure authorized to define what exactly it is. Opinions about its essence and scope vary widely according to the political or philosophic background of its own interpreters. The current effort to establish an Islamic State, with a designated Caliph, again to take up the mission assigned to Islam, brings to our attention the question: What is Islam?
The issue of terror is a further aspect of this same understanding. Many outside Islam seek to separate terror and Islam as if they were, in their usage, independent or even opposed ideas. This latter view is almost impossible seriously to maintain in the light of Islamic history and the text of the Quran itself.
John Kerry, however, insists that what we see is terrorism with nothing to do with Islam. The Obama administration seems to have a rule never to identify Islam with terrorism, no matter what the evidence or what representatives of the Islamic State themselves say.
Ecumenism and liberalism both, in their differing ways, because of their commitment to tolerance and free speech, make it difficult to deal with what is happening in Islamic states. Islam is not friendly to relativism or to subtle distinctions.
Is terror intrinsic to Islam?
Yet, we can ask: is this Islamic State anything more than a pipe-dream? No Islamic state has any serious possibility of defeating modern armies. But, ironically, they no longer think that modern armies will be necessary. They are convinced that widespread use of terrorism and other means of civil disorder can be successful. No one really has the will or the means to control the destructive forces that the Islamic State already has in place.
Finally, the case of the Islamic State and of the jihadists is not just a threat arising out of Islams mission to conquer the world for Allah. It is also a moral case, that the life of the West is atheist and decadent. It does not deserve its prosperity and position. The mission of mankind is the submission to Allah in all things.
It is easy to write this movement off as fanatical and ruthless, which it is. To the outside world, it sounds horrific, but I suspect not to those who believe its truth and see the current revival of Islam with relief. The second or third class ranking of Islam in the modern world is over. But to the degree that we misjudge what is motivating the renewal of Islam, we will never understand why it exists as it does.

Utter, moronic, easily refuted CRAP!

I know and understand that blood pressure rises about all of this, but try to always remember that God is still on the throne and all of these clowns are going down, big time.
When he repeated that we will never be at war with Islam that was the signal to the Muzzie world that he had their collective 6. Not to worry. I might have to drop a few bombs but there will not be serious intentions. Stay cool, stay calm try not to be too much “In our face”.
Entirely apt description. I'd take it further, but as you point out, we need to have some decorum. Might put dumb, criminal, inept, and narcissistic in front just to clarify.
If you condemn Obama, you condemn Islam...
Every time the 0yutz runs his mouth something bad happens.
Absolutely they are and they have a plan for peace.
It comes after everyone who is not a muslim is dead.
They have also stated they are willing to wait a thousand years to complete the task.
Islam is to peace as a dog turd is to a fine cigar.
