The first results are coming in for the referendum to decide whether Scotland should stay in the UK or become an independent country.

It might have depended on whether or not the Scots had attacked a British Army post.
Robert the Bruce, Declaration of Arbroath, 6 April 1320
PFL - thanks for posting the quote.
Yes, spot on.
The shorthand of GB/UK to mean England sadly has taken root over the last 300 yrs and to many people outside our island, UK and GB are just other words for England. Which, as you said, is wrong.
Ironically, the phrase Great Britain was coined by a Scot, James I, a Scottish king who joined the English-Scots thrones, and the British Empire was coined by Dr John Dee, the famous Welshman of the 17th C.
Confusing, innit?......lol
And there’s more: the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and the Scilly Isles are part of England and therefore Britain, but the Isle of Man is technically not part of the UK, but is a Crown Colony, although even more confusingly, most people just consider it part of the UK generally but not part of England, some will consider it part of England as well as the UK.....lol
(no doubt Vanders, sinsempire and other English freepers will be along to tell me that I have got it wrong!...lol)
And we never did, when we joined with England, it was and remains part of a union with them, Wales and Ireland/NI. Scotland joined the UK as a free country in 1707, and we remain one, to leave or stay.
The Channel Islands are just a few miles off the coast of France, and were occupied by the Germans during WWII.
What are your thoughts on Salmond resigning? (Sorry if I missed a post where you already commented)
Love it
Good for we NO’s. Anything that fractures the YES campaign is good.
Don’t like the man, find him arrogant, although there is no doubt he is a highly intelligent man, and he’s done a fine job with the SNP.
What replaces him is from a pool of equally abrasive candidates who may turn voters off (Nicola Sturgeon who is the favourite), and rather bland-but-good-but-charisma free men like John Swinney.
Thanks!
We usually have the same situation: one you don’t favor leaves, but is replaced by someone even worse.
Ft. Sumpter was located in Charleston Harbor, Charleston, SC. The country was the Confederate States of America.
Clarification : I was reacting to the union jack flag on their vehicles.
And would rather have seen st Andrews cross on those vehicles.
They gave it 110% alright!
Just FYI HK wants to rejoin the UK (they didn’t become independent, they became a colony of China instead)
The Union Jack is the flag not of England, but Britain as a whole, the blue of Scotland, the white of England and Wales, the red of Ulster.
Knew a Manx girl at uni. She said that the Manx generally cheer for the English team at football events. Whilst I’m sure they wouldn’t exactly describe themselves as English, they certainly feel connected to England on some level. I fear that this referendum may have damaged the bonds that bind the UK forever though. I have heard many people who started out as firm no’s who took being British for granted, then moved to ‘yes’ because of the better together sides ‘scaremongering’. Even though BT won, it is only because of pragmatism. I fear most Scots have lost that emotional connection with the UK and the ties that bind us may have been frayed irreparably. All it will take next time is another unpopular foreign war or another economic crisis a decade or so down the line and the union will be gone forever unless something is done to restore British patriotism and pride that once existed throughout the UK.
