Zeins also suggests keeping another item in your bedroom: "Buy a can of wasp hornet spray in the hardware store or the supermarket, keep it by your bedside or the floor," he said. "It's more powerful than police Mace.
"The great part is, when you spray, it will go 20 to 25 feet," Zeins added. An intruder hit with the spray will be temporarily blinded. Please check your state and local laws on the legality of using these sprays for self-defense.
Zeins has another tip: Sleep with all your bedroom doors open. You want your kids to hear what's going on; then you can get the family all in one place and leave together.
In a worst-case scenario if you are captured by an intruder, like Susan Dawson you should cooperate and tell them where the valuables are, Zeins advises.

For a little extra excitement, let the kids shoot the wasp spray across the flame of a lighter at the dead perp. Fun for the whole family. lol
“I read a report that said wasp spray was no more effective than spraying any canned chemical (except mace or pepper spray) and was completely ineffective in repelling an attacker. Its an urban myth.”
Here is one that will work though it is a very short range solution
Take a 1 pint atomizer bottle
Add two tables spoons of ammonia + a dollop of laundry soap
Fill with water.
Set it on mist and spray a cloud of that in front of someone. It works like tear gas.
I use this on a bicycle to repel dogs. You could rob a store with this stuff.
That said - a .410 pump shot gun would be a better option in a home. They are easier to handle than a pistol make more noise and don’t require you to be as good a shot
All anyone can do is simply make it difficult and as noisy as possible for the perp to gain access or get close enough to do harm. Take as many advantages away from them as you can. A win/win situation is where they simply give up and leave. Their life is spared and homeowner is spared years of litigation and upper tens of thousands of dollars in legal expenses.
Anyone breaking in to my home runs the risk of acquiring some metal. 5.56 mm.
I thought, how stupid! But that was in the anti-gun days after the murder of Bobby Kennedy when people were giving up their guns to the police.
I keep a Cold Steel spear right next to my door. It is not as good as a pistol but I don’t keep a pistol right next to the door.
I could see me making a mistake and a real agile, strong person grabbing the handle behind the blade and taking it away from me. Still I would rather have it than not.
At one time, I would have been that strong agile person but the years take a toll.
You should use the signs from the riots from 1968.

THIS HOUSE IS NOT ARMED!
Now, don’t you feel safer?
No, hornet spray is not a good compromise. If anything it'll be used to keep you quiet once you and your family are tied up. Same with pepper spray. My gun is not just "in a drawer". It's in a quick-access lockbox and I can have it open and in my hand in seconds. They're not expensive. They're easy to mount. I also keep a mag light next it. I will not shoot in the dark but if I shine that light on anyone that I don't recognize, they will die. People that enter other peoples homes in the night have forfeited their right to life.
To each his own about the lights. I want to be 100% beyond any doubt at all sure of my target if I ever had to shoot inside my house. I’m already sensory impaired as far as hearing goes. Meaning if it was family I might not hear them.
Wonder how the tube and nail for gutters from the isle in Home Depot would work.

Can envision it now. You wake up startled by an intruder in your room, you fumble around and find your can of wasp spray, you fumble trying to get the cap off, as he is upon you with his knife out you spray yourself in the face with wasp spray and pass out. You awake naked feeling violated and call the police. The police arrive and take your report, but before he departs he handcuffs you and takes you down to the station for booking for a felony violation of EPA regulations concerning the misuse of insecticides.

. I have one of those too! Nasty bugger, that. But then I also have a collection of swords, spears, and daggers sprinkled around the house. I almost feel sorry for whoever breaks into my house. By the time the sheriff gets there if they're still alive they'll be out of their minds...
Some good ideas here I think.
I use the little dog idea because they are cheap to feed, easy to bathe, noisy as heck at the slightest provocation.
One not mentioned yet is some inexpensive (or as expensive as you want to go) electronic shooting muffs. Keep them by the bed and put them on first.
Amplified hearing allows you to stay in your bedroom and hear the bad guy(s) moving, talking, breathing in some cases so you are warned when they are close.
The thing that occurs when you touch off your 12ga, nice AR style rifle, 9mm (or any other) handgun in a confined area is a very loud noise that will ruin Beethoven for you forever.
I do mean permanently. As a bonus you may get tinnitus which is the cheery sounds of ringing in your ears at ALL times.
Amplified hearing protection is as much a defensive weapon as a hearing saver. It belongs next to your bright light (of which you have two there because 2 is 1 and 1 is none). Anyone with any low-light training knows exactly what that means.
When you need it, you will need a spare in case you drop, throw, lose or break your primary light. Seriously.
Consider pistol caliber rifles in any caliber (think of .22lr last) because they are powerful against man-sized predators and easy to shoot well. Much easier than a handgun is to shoot well. An inexpensive red dot sight will allow you to use focus on the target (which you will want to do anyway) and just put the dot where the bullet should go and press the trigger until you cannot see the target anymore.
Remember, you were in fear of your life or that of your family of innocents.
After an experience this morning I sure wouldn't want Wasp Spray as my weapon of choice. I was doing some yard work at my Moms yesterday and discovered a Yellow jacket nest in the ground before they found me. I went to Wally World and the only brand they had was Hot Shot. I sprayed the hole. This morning I went and bought another can. They were still coming in and out of the hole so I sprayed again. The blasted can failed. Nothing but a small stream.
I went to a grocery store and bought some Raid wasp and hornet spray. I used it. This afternoon some were still going in and out. I want a firearm if I feel my life is in danger. You get multiple chances with one.
We used to live out in the country off a highway with no neighbors anywhere close. I feel safer here than I did there and that was before crime and drugs became so rampant everywhere.
When we lived there in the mid 60’s a man came to our door and I innocently open it. He asked me if the Kennedy’s lived here or the Johnsons. It was during JFK and LBJ term.
When he asked me that I felt a chill go down my spine. He was just fishing. There was a pick up sitting by the garage and he kept looking at it. I don’t know if he thought a man might be in the house or if he was just wondering if he could find the keys.
He didn’t do anything but he thought about it as he slowly walked back down our driveway. I called the sheriff and he came and picked him up.
There was a prison farm not far away and from the look of him, he had just been released.
While all your points are good, I get a chuckle at how you put a discussion of how loud a gunshot is in the middle of a discussion of the need for amplified hearing aids ...
They seemed to go together in case someone wasn’t sure why.
Yes, I basically have the same thing. Spears, swords, machetes, a Cold Steel Khukri and a Cold Steel (Black Thorn) walking stick.
I am not sure why I have always been attracted to bladed weapons but have for my entire life. Part of it may be that I have an inherent fear of swords in the hands of someone I do not trust.
I have gotten to where I need to use a walking stick and that Black Thorn would probably kill without too much effort. It is a bit heavy but that large knob would do the damage.
Sorry, I wonder if you mean why the muffs. They cut off at the sound of the shot and then back on. Turned up all they way is the best way to use them.
