On Friday, all three network morning shows seized on reports that Sarah Palin and her family were "caught in a massive brawl" during a house party in Anchorage, Alaska. ABC's Good Morning America opened with substitute co-host Lara Spencer declaring: "One witness saying it was like an episode of Jerry Springer, her kids throwing punches. What sparked this rumble in the tundra?" The song Eye of the Tiger was heard playing in the background.
In the full report that followed on GMA, correspondent Paula Faris pushed the tabloid story: "According to the Washington Post, Palin, along with her husband Todd and kids Bristol, Willow, and Track, arriving in a stretch Hummer. The Post also reporting that as the beer started flowing, that's when the fighting started." Supposed eyewitness Eric Thompson proclaimed: "I heard Sarah Palin scream out, 'You know who we are, don't you?' It was like we were just on a Jerry Springer episode."
After the report from Faris, news anchor Amy Robach urged other party guests to send in video of what happened: "Someone's cell phone had to be rolling. Come on, people." Co-host George Stephanopoulos chimed in: "If it was, we will find it."
Will Stephanopoulos bring that same tenacity to investigating his old bosses the Clintons during the 2016 presidential campaign?
At least ABC included someone who claimed to have actually been at the party, on NBC's Today, news anchor Natalie Morales was simply repeating internet rumors:

If it’s true that the Palins are like the guests on a Jerry Springer free for all, that should gain them a lot of Democrat fans, since most of Jerry’s guests and fanbase are low-life Democrat scum.
Exactly so.
>>Any video corroboration?
Snowmobile temperature too high. Cameras on the blink?
sorry..... I just can’t help myself sometimes ;)
Its a tale as old as time: A former vice-presidential nominee and her family roll up to an alcohol-soaked party in a stretch Hummer limousine, only to find themselves at the center of a bare-knuckle melee involving 20 people.
Wait -- what?
OK, so maybe the brawl that Sarah Palin and several members of her family were involved in last Saturday night isnt exactly the type of story you expect to hear about someone who was nearly elected to the nations second highest office six years ago.
But with The Washington Post, Good Morning America, the New York Times and dozens of other media outlets all filing reports on the incident over the last few days, its clear that theres a high level of interest in the events that transpired on that regrettable night in Anchorage.
Palin has not commented publicly on the episode, and there is little doubt that the former Alaska governor would rather talk about anything else.
But RealClearPolitics spoke with a source close to the Palin family, who wanted to provide their version of the events in question.
What no one disputes is that several members of the former first family of Alaska arrived at a well-attended birthday party, at which several competitive snowmobile racers were present.
Todd Palin, himself an elite racer of snow machines (as the vehicles are known in the 49th state), was celebrating his 50th birthday that night, though the party was not being held on his behalf.
With a live band, dancing, and the former governor rocking red-white-and-blue high-tops, everyone seemed to be having a good time.
But then, some words were exchanged. And thats where the stories diverge significantly.
According to previously published eyewitness reports, the fracas began when Track Palin, the former governors adult son, confronted a former boyfriend of his 20-year-old sister, Willow.
But according to the Palin familys version of events, the instigator was actually the former boyfriend.
The initial tussle occurred, the source said, after the young man in question tried to get in to the Hummer limousine after hed engaged in some unspecified questionable behavior.
Track Palin soon found himself struggling to fend off four men who had piled on him, according to the source.
Todd Palin then inserted himself into the brawl, which left the former First Dude of Alaska bleeding.
Next, it was Sarah Palins turn to leave her own mark on the most talked about rumble in Anchorage since the 1964 earthquake.
On the previous night, she had been in Houston to speak at a fundraiser benefiting the Mighty Oaks Warrior Foundation, which helps wounded veterans. That event apparently was fresh on Palins mind when she engaged in the tumult on Saturday night.
According to the source, as her husband and son were trading blows with their adversaries, Palin was yelling (in reference to her son), Dont you know who he is? Hes a vet!
This rendition of her words differs slightly but significantly from a previous report, which had Palin shouting, Dont you know who I am?
Over the years, Sarah Palin has spoken frequently about her sons U.S. Army service in the Iraq War, and Track currently serves as a counselor, working with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
From my understanding, she was in full mama grizzly mode defending the kids, the source said of Sarah Palins mindset.
According to the source, Track Palin left the fight nursing four cracked ribs, while his father was bloodied up.
At some point, Bristol Palin became involved in the free-for-all, but the Palin source took issue with a report suggesting she had brandished a mean right hook, noting that the eldest Palin daughter is left-handed.
The Anchorage Police Department confirmed that there were about 20 people involved in the ruckus and that while no one wanted to press charges, an investigation is ongoing.
In an unrelated episode, a 25-year-old man was arrested last Sunday on charges of stalking Bristol Palin after allegedly sending her approximately 1,000 Facebook messages and then appearing in her driveway -- an incident the Palin source described as scary.
From my understanding, she was in full mama grizzly mode defending the kids, the source said of Sarah Palins mindset.
