This is more Patriot Act surveillance state fall-out...read the story, the Rat-contolled Congress passed the amendment that led to this and then Bush signed it.

The very next paragraph after your excerpt says "It's Bush's FaultTM".

Yahoo said in a statement that feds changed a law during the George W. Bush administration that allowed government to demand certain user data from online services provided by the company. Yahoo subsequently challenged that law change.

Meanwhile, the government plans to require fishing boats carry satellite tracking devices and video cameras to watch the nefarious activities of the crew.

This is why I've dumped my yahoo, Facebook accounts. I do not have a smart phone. I try to use a secure proxies whenever I can.

I will begin utilizing my credits/debit cards less and less. Scrap the rewards cards.

This nonsense has gone on too long. The gubbamint will argue that in public, one does not have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Well, why on earth do they argue this point then maintain THEIR privacy/anonymity so closely?

It's called CONTROL. We as citizens have the power to push back on all this...but will we? Will you?

Americans have a right to privacy even in the public square.

Yahoo executives said the federal government made them participate in a surveillance program and turn over key private client information — else face $250,000 per day in fines.

WHO GAVE THE ORDER? A federal official, obviously. That official needs to be identified and put high on the list for a near-future "accident". A few wannabee dictators having a run of bad luck might just clue in the rest that such behavior won't be tolerated.
