This was one of the headlines greeting me when I woke up this morning, and in a week filled with generally dreary news it was a small ray of sunshine. A US airstrike six days ago took out Ahmed Godane in Somalia.
A leader of the militant Islamist group al-Shabaab has been killed in an American air strike, military chiefs have confirmed.
The death of Ahmed Godane was announced on Friday by Pentagon press secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby, who declared it a “major symbolic and operational loss”.
The lethal strike in Somalia took place on Monday, but military analysts were still assessing its outcome during the week.
Godane was a co-founder of the terrorist group, which has carried out bombings and suicide attacks in the east African country and elsewhere.
I actually first saw this story on CNN as I was pouring coffee and was somewhat taken aback to hear the anchor describing Godane as a warrior poet. (According to this bio, the “warrior poet” is a Somali tradition.) I’m not sure what sort of poetry Godane was writing, but I don’t imagine it was from the same school as Yeats. In any event, his days of inspirational scribbling have come to an end.

Sorry Dave, the EPA has declared all virgins are an endangered species and can no longer be distributed, possessed, passed around, gifted to, re-branded or touched by any mooslimbs. Helen Thomas, Cankles Hillary and Debby Kinknherhair are the exclusive property of Allah himself, especially since nobody else will take them.
The 72 virgins thing was a misprint, it was supposed to read 72 veterans, very angry US veterans, who will kick their ass for eternity.
“Warrior Poet” was how they described Che Guevara, too. The left is so enchanted by any anti-Western flake who has ever scribbled a verse.
That said, unless we kill a lot of members, this is meaningless. I read that the hope was that if the organization were “decapitated,” everything would halt. We’ve seen how well that worked with Osama. AQ is still out there and if anything, even more determined. He was already out of the loop when we killed him.
The liberal theory is that killing just the leader will discourage the rest and then there’ll be mafia-style infighting for power and they’ll be debilitated.
That’s not going to happen. The Mafia were criminals in it for their own benefit, and comparing Islamic terrorism to common crime (which is the model used by the US now) is ridiculously inappropriate.
These people are motivated by their crazed ideology, which has been crazy and violent for 1400 years, and they hate us a lot more than they hate each other, so the power-struggle-to-the-death simply isn’t going to happen. Or if it does, it will end with the most radical and violent person winning, because that’s what the followers want. Like it or not, they have to be killed too.
I’ve often wondered about that!
I sorta guessed it “was somethingf like that”...
Well, that’ll come as a huge disappointment to Muslim suicide bombers, or maybe it’ll be a big relief.
