What's thought to be an audio recording of the shooting death of Michael Brown has reportedly surfaced. According to CNN, an unidentified man, who has since been interviewed by the FBI, is said to have managed to record the incident in which Michael Brown was shot by Officer Darren Wilson earlier this month, setting off a national firestorm.
The most notable tidbit from the short recording (and what will become subject to the most immediately scrutiny and parsing) is the existence of two distinct volleys of gunfire from Officer Darren Wilson's weapon. From CNN:
class="cnn_storypgraphtxt cnn_storypgraph3">In the recording, a quick series of shots can be heard, followed by a pause and then another quick succession of shots.
Forensic audio expert Paul Ginsberg analyzed the recording and said he detected at least 10 gunshots -- a cluster of six, followed by four.
The man who recorded the shooting was talking to someone on video chat when the sounds of gunfire erupted in the background. The Daily Mail added:
Lopa Blumenthal, the attorney for the unidentified man who recorded the alleged gunfire nearby said that she believed the audio shows, if it is authentic, that Officer Wilson had a clear 'point of contemplation' while pulling the trigger and aiming at Brown."
Also of some serious importance, should the tape's authenticity be confirmed, is the fact that ten (or, by some counts, eleven) shots were fired at Brown by Wilson.
Here is the segment as it aired on CNN with the audio recording.

Count the casings. There should be a bullet in the car where the thief/thug smashed the eye socket of the officer and grabbed the gun and in the struggle it went off in the front seat. But I don’t care if he had a pause— if the thug kept running at the officer— you keep shooting. I can’t even make up how this means anything. This case is open and shut.
This recording should sell a few more t-shirts.
It makes sense really, he was hit 6 times, but he may well have shot many more. As someone else pointed out, the first shots might have hit him in the arm, and the latter ones in the head as he approached the officer, who knows.
Someone called into a STL Morning show and mentioned possible echos...
So CNN comes up with a “sound recording” of gun shots, etc. NBC edited 911 tapes. Uh-huh.
We used to be across from a Gun Club. There would be a shot and the the echo. Sounds like two shots.
The software that will do everything you mentioned is called "Cool Edit" (It may have a new name now that Adobe has bought it)
With my cheapo music keyboard I can. become a complete orchestra.
Needless to say, someone well acquainted with it can do a lot more.
Audio of any kind should NEVER be accepted as evidence.
Hmmm. Weren’t snoopy dogbreath and p diddly and spite lee and some other “music” moguls at the “celebration of mb” yesterday? Seems like somebody might have access to a studio to make such a recording.
“Lopa Blumenthal, the attorney for the unidentified man who recorded the alleged gunfire nearby...”
Maybe the shots were fired at first in the car...Speaks well for not restricting the number of bullets in your magazine.
One could just as easily say that Officer Wilson after shooting, told the man to stop...freeze, but then he came running at him and shot again.
I thought there were 12 people corroborating testimony that Brown rushed Wilson, who had been attacked already by Brown.
I’m thinking, this is the same FBI who can’t figure out that the president submitted a false birth certificate.
Presumably Officer Wilson loaded his gun to capacity, as prescribed by dept regs. Certainly, they would have taken Wilson’s gun as evidence. They can count the number of rounds left in the gun. They can count the number of recovered shell casings. That will determine the number of rounds fired.
“What’s thought to be an audio recording of the shooting death of Michael Brown has reportedly surfaced. “
Doesn’t fit the headline. But then probably neither does the story fit the idealogues’ needs
If this kid, rest his soul, was not dangerously high on PCP, it would amaze me, not that cops are always right, of course, and not that there aren’t other social problems
There will be a holder-led narrative so we will never know
Officer Williams used a gun with a mag holding 12 and one more in the chamber.
How do we get 14 shots fired? Did I misread?
It doesn’t help that all the evidence was shipped to a lab in DC, a federal lab I’m guessing.
Now we read an account sourced by the FBI, and know Officer Williams is in trouble.
Coming tonight on CNN an endangered sea turtle with a go pro video attached captures Indonesian Flight 387 going down, film a 5:00
You fire six shots at a guy charging you. You think that should be enough. He keeps coming. You unload four more rounds.
There, that was hard to figure out. Whew am I tired.
CNN’s crawl said they can not verify.
IOW the audio came from nbc’s audio editing room?
crump and parks are working overtime to salvage this fiasco.
“Forensic audio expert Paul Ginsberg analyzed the recording and said he detected at least 10 gunshots — a cluster of six, followed by four.”
Let me guess. Ginsberg was asked to opine on how many shots he might have heard on this recording, but was not asked if he knows for certain that it genuinely represents the Brown shooting incident, and if so, how.
Sounds like the recording do not have the first gunshot, from inside the car? Sex chat didn’t start until the exact second of the main shooting?
Doesn’t seem to me to be a ground breaking piece of evidence either way. Though it does seem to correlate with what the witness that was accidentally recorded said. His statement was “I think he missed him. Then the dude started running kept coming towards the police.” Brown probably ran towards Officer Wilson and the first volley of six were ineffective, hence the second volley of four.
As for the number shots fired, the authorities no doubt already knew that anyhow.
During Garand matches, when we are in the pit, pulling targets between shots, there are three distinct sounds. The first is the whip-like crack of the round going overhead (supersonic speeds), the second is the whump of the round against the backdrop (immediately after the crack), and then the last is the sound of the firing of the round finally reaching us as it had to travel 200 yards.
It was "CRACK-WHUMP-BANG". Kinda cool, actually.
Neither of these assertions has yet been proven. There are other theories that explain the actual known facts, though not perhaps as well.
For instance, if the cop has a broken head bone, it is possible Brown gave that to him while legitimately defending himself against an unprovoked attack by the cop. Admittedly, not very likely.
We also have, to my knowledge, no indisputable evidence that he was charging the cop when killed. Though I suspect that's exactly what happened, it hasn't been proven yet.
