Ferguson-like attack in Utah escapes media notice; race bias seen
Washington Times ^ | 08/26/2014 | By Valerie Richardson

On the surface, the cases appear nearly identical: Michael Brown and Dillon Taylor, two young, unarmed men with sketchy criminal pasts shot to death by police officers two days apart.

But while the world knows of the highly publicized situation involving 18-year-old Mr. Brown, whose Aug. 9 death in Ferguson, Missouri touched off violence, protests and an angry national debate, most people outside Utah have never heard of 20-year-old Mr. Taylor.

Critics say there’s a reason for the discrepancy in media coverage: race. Mr. Brown was black and the officer who shot him was white. Mr. Taylor wasn’t black — he’s been described as white and Hispanic — and the officer who shot him Aug. 11 outside a 7-Eleven in South Salt Lake wasn’t white.

The perceived double standard is fueling resentment and talk of double standards on conservative talk radio and social media, where the website Twitchy has compiled a list of Twitter comments asking why Mr. Brown’s death has been front-page news for weeks while Mr. Taylor’s was a footnote at best.

FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE STORY....

FROM THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE:

EXCERPT:

Dillon Taylor was shot by police Monday night outside a 7-Eleven store at 2102 S. State St. The officers involved were responding to a report of a man brandishing a handgun in the area of the store.

The South Salt Lake police department, which is investigating the incident, has declined to say whether a weapon was found, or what actions by Taylor — verbal or physical — were deemed threatening enough for police to fire at least twice.

Meanwhile, Jerrail Taylor insists his brother did not have a handgun on him.

Jerrail Taylor said he, his brother and a cousin had just gotten drinks at the 7-Eleven when the officers, guns drawn, confronted them.

Dillon Taylor initially didn’t hear the officers’ demands to get down on the ground with his hands on his head, Jerrail Taylor said, because he was wearing headphones.

Witnesses gave conflicting accounts of whether Dillon Taylor reached toward his waistband or, as his brother claimed, was just adjusting his pants.

The attack doesn’t fit the narrative so it is not relevant.

.....

Anyone notice how Hispanics are always counted as non-white, except when counting them as white fits the media agenda?

Not comparable because the white kid didn’t attack the cop like St. Brown.

We also had 2 whites killed by a black mob at Texas A&M.

Double standards all around, inside and out, round and about.

Difference between Mike Brown and Dillon Taylor.

Taylor was actually convicted for thug crimes prior to being killed and was on parole and in fact had violated parole so there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Believing the statements herein about the incident are equivalent to believing what Dorian Johnson initially said about Ferguson™.

There is a cop-cam in this case.

“We also had 2 whites killed by a black mob at Texas A&M.”

That’s horrible and I bet there was no media attention for those murders.

I understand the political media bias, but another bias exists that is never mentioned! Civilized behavior as a cultural basis for society. Sadly many Black Americans culturally are not lovers of law and justice if it even remotely seems unfair by their cultural standards and is manifest by the looting and protests over perceived injustice without the legal procedures being followed that as Americans we all subscribe to.

“hat’s horrible and I bet there was no media attention for those murders.”

No media attention at all.

Just imagine the firestorm if 4 clean-cut black college kids were murdered by a mob of whites.

This is racism that is built into our government policy wrt crime stats.

Victim is hispanic, he’s hispanic.
Perp is hispanic, he’s “white”.
