The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has said that he would not recommend U.S. military airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria until he determines that they have become a direct threat to the U.S.
Gen. Martin Dempsey, speaking to reporters on board a military plane traveling to Afghanistan, said Sunday that he believes the Sunni insurgent group formerly known as ISIS is more of a regional threat and is not currently plotting or planning attacks against the U.S. or Europe.

Far too many Americans think they’re still riding the Hope-n-Change Holiday From History Happytime Train.
Memo to them: That train derailed long ago.
Meanwhile, this administration abruptly disestablishes Joint Forces Command (2010) and places joint training and doctrine directly under the Joint Staff. Gosh, what could go wrong?
I wonder if the term, "short sidedness" derived from Gen. Short and Pearl Harbor?
To me, the difference is Short didn't want to see it but Obama is actually on the side of the enemy!
Since Billy Jeff Buttafuco's terms, the left has been using that against American Citizens that believe in the Constitution and sleeping at the wheel while the Middle East burns.
“I agree with McInnerney (sp?) on FNC this morning.....Dempsey and probably got calls from the WH to change their opinion.”
BINGO!
Wonder what Obama has on him.
Just a few days ago:
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman: Open Borders Make ISIL an Immediate Threat
“General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at a Pentagon briefing Thursday that because of open borders and immigration issues, the Islamic State of Iraq is an immediate threat.

He saw a threat before he didn’t see a threat.
He’s been taking flip-flop lessons from John Kerry.
Former CIA chief: Matter of time before ISIS tries to attack West
http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/24/world/meast/isis-attack-west/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
“An ISIS attack against the West is a question of timing — “not of inevitably, not of intent,” according to the former head of the CIA, retired Gen. Michael Hayden
Speaking to CNN’s Jim Sciutto on “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” Hayden said he expects ISIS to attempt an attack on targets in the United States or Europe.
“ISIS is a very powerful local organization, and probably a reasonably powerful regional terrorist organization,” Hayden said. “But it’s one that has global ambitions — and it has the tools.”
Dempsey and Hagel both said YES on Friday and I though both were uncharacteristically alarmed. Even to the point that I said something smelled fishy since their viewpoint was at odds with the way the administration has behaved in the past about terrorists.
Today’s position by Dempsey is a complete about face. The man child was golfing and Dempsey / Hagel made an uncontrolled statement. Now, obongo and the lizard queen are back and they have given new strict orders... “there is no threat. Got that boys? There is no threat.”
Remember, obungo saved us all from terrorism, there is no threat.
I knew something was amiss last week with the candor exhibited by D and H... now the administration is back in control. To be a fly on the wall.
BINGO!!
Honor, obungo and this administration are mutually exclusive.
Do not dishonor honor bu putting it in the same sentence with obungo and the white mosque on pennsylvania gang.
You should cast your hopes much lower than to expect honor from this bunch of cretin traitors.
This Administrtion, even iwith a group as blood thirsty and craven as ISIS, will not risk their damnable political narrative, in response.
Other Generls have warned us. Dempsey should tell the truth, or reign in protest and then say why.
Dempsey waiting for another 9/11 smoking gun. Remove Dempsey, remove Obama. Special election.
How libertarian of him. Is guaranteeing our safety?
As long as the democrats control the white house there will be no attacks from ISIS. They’ll all be workplace violence.
Now air strikes can only occur in Syria if ISIS is a direct threat to the US. In IRAQ, strikes are justified as National Security Interest.
Here is my theory. Obama does not want to defeat ISIS because then he has to deal with the "IRAQ Question" - how to unite Iraq. However, Iraq is lost: Kurds are as strong as ever with Turkish support; Sunni will unite against ISIS but aa SUNNI solidarity movement, SHIAs will be left with a smaller Iraq with Baghdad as the capital. OBAMA does not want to be known as the guy who lost Iraq so a long war is in his interest.
Someone please tell team Obama that the very reason for ISIS existence is to make the EVERYONE Islamic (or else be killed) and that INCLUDES Americans.
Or give Assad a bigger hammer (free of charge) to hit ISIS.
Dempsey is a little crap weasel well suited to be the duffer in chief’s primary military advisor.
