UK clearly beats it for public drunkness.

The operative word being "public". Doesn't say how much drinking goes on at home... That's were the eastern countries make up a lot of ground...

Japan is a country where you can buy beer and hard liquor out of vending machines on the street.

Nobody can convince me that they are “moderate” drinkers.

Well, yes, you might well have a point here. Not to mention the Brits are mostly consume beers and East Europeans prefers vodka.

Well, Asians probably don’t need to consume as much as 17 liters a year to stay drunk all the time.
But as I said earlier South Koreans are a tough bunch in that department.

I see the countries that tee-total have the highest number of beheadings.

Alcohol consumption prevents severe headaches?

17.5 liters per year is 48 mililiters per day.
The US’s 9.2 liters per year is 25 mililiters per day.

Doesn’t look like much that way, does it?

It is how you drink it that matters.

When in Muslim counties, the Muzzies don’t drink, but when they come to a non-muslim country, the booze flows.

Brits like to go and drink in public, while the Eastern Europeans tend to do it more at home.

You are right about Brits, and about Muslims too.
I once had a muzzie employee, a religious type who loved to cite Quran, criticise girls for wearing short skirts and all the moralizing muzzie crap like that. Everyone wasn’t good enough for him: women are sluts, men are drunks etc. One day I caught him not only only drank at work, but also using salo (Ukrainian salted pork fat) as a vodka snack. I was fully aware on muzzie hypocrisy but it was actually too much. This guy said anyone has a right to small weakness and Allah is not looking at the infidel land so he wasn’t caught and may not be considered a sinner. I told him not to worry about Allah but that he is enough of a sinner for me to go and look for another job.

When Saudi Businessmen go abroad on business, as soon as the plane leaves Saudi airspace, they will empty all the liquor on the plane, and when they land, they head straight for the nearest strip bar.

IIRC, the 9/11 terrorists went to a strip club the day before 9/11.

I believe the Muslims drink more than they say.

Kind of like Baptists.

How do you avoid a Baptist drinking all your booze when you take them on a fishing trip?

Invite another Baptist.

I’m not suprised there is a significant portion of the population that has a gene which prevents them from having more than one or two drinks - very common in asian populations. In addition, while the guys tend to drink heavy (those who can), a much lower percentage of the ladies do so.

My wife (from Japan) is a teetotaler, my BIL can’t drink more than 2, my 2 SILs and other BIL are imbibers.

So I would guess it would put them in middle pack.

Central and Eastern Europe and Russia have always had a big rep as huge boozers.

For my first visit, I arrived in Prague late at night. Breakfast in Prague @8 am the next morning = every person in the place with a glass of Pilsner Urquel in front of them. When in Rome.....

Love Prague.

I was in Ireland a few years ago and it seemed like everybody got sloppy drunk every night, except me.

I can tell you that there has been a significant change in alcohol consumption habits over the last two decades.

Must have been. During my times there in the late 80's and early 90's, on the train ride home at night, every bench at every train station would be occupied by a passed out kaishain. Those were different economic times, of course, and I remember watching businessmen eating shaved gold over their sushi while powering down staggeringly expensive whiskey.

I'm glad it changed because I always felt sorry for the wives and children of these men. From what I experienced, they paid a high price for this "social obligation."
