Isis surges towards the borders of Turkey as west mulls options

Islamic State extremists are pushing to secure the border between Turkey and north-western Syria as the main gateway for recruits to join the caliphate they have imposed across much of eastern Syria and western Iraq.

Large numbers of jihadists from Islamic State (formerly Isis) are moving this weekend towards the Turkish border area, about 60 miles north of Aleppo, in columns of armoured trucks that they looted from abandoned Iraqi military bases. The area is now one of the most active front lines in the group's attempt to redraw the borders of the Levant, a campaign that will have huge ramifications for Turkey.

Residents and Syrian opposition militants in the town of Marea, close to the Turkish border, on Saturday said that Isis had advanced to within sight of the town and had sent envoys to negotiate access.

Not a surge, it’s a retreat to a safe haven. I bet Baghdadi, released 5 years ago by the current administration, is leading the way.

Obama’s indecision continues to cost lives and he just doesn’t give a damn.

Under current circumstances, I’ll start fighting AFTER ISIS takes the White House.

What indecision? You mean his quandary over how much to pretend he’s on our side?

Turkey has been a little nuts lately. They will probably welcome ISIS with open arms. Don’t trust the Turks.

Agreed

you joke re: Turkey

No, I don't. What if Turkey shifts gears on being so open to ISIS, once they're attacked and wants help against them? What if the battle to disintegrate ISIS gets real and extends into Turkey? What if the Kurds in Iraq work with Kurds in Turkey for independence? These are just some possibilities. Turkey is in NATO. That's awkward.

Try getting Obama and the leaders of the other NATO nations to defend Turkey against ISIS. “What do you mean ‘we,’ Mustafah?”

Erdogan’s best option is to back Kurdish independence, cede the Kurdish areas of Turkey to the new nation, and help them expand to their ethnic boundaries in Syria, Iraq, and Iran. That would be of economic benefit as well, since the Kurds have oil fields, and the Turks are building a pipeline to supply the EU market.

Erdogan probably won’t, of course.
