Western intelligence agencies have been assisting the Syrian government of Bashar al Assad fight militants of Isis (now called the 'Islamic State'), by providing details on the location of militant leaders for targeted air strikes.
The information was passed to Assad's government by German intelligence service Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), which acted as an intermediary, a source told the Independent...
In recent weeks, Syrian forces have launched a series of airstrikes against Islamic State commanders and headquarters, as they battle to halt the advance of jihadist forces from their stronghold in the east of the country.
The Assad regime has been accused of covertly supporting Islamic State in the belief that it would swallow up other rebel groups, but Islamic State militants have scored a series of victories against the Syrian army, forcing Assad to step up his campaign against them.
In July and August Islamic State drove jihadist group Jabhat al-Nusra from the oil-rich province of Deir Ezzor, and took key Syrian army bases in Raqqa province and Hasakh.
Currently, the Syrian army is engaged in a fierce battle to hold Tabqa airbase in Raqqa province. Its fall would lead Hama, Syria's fourth largest city, open to attack from Islamic State fighters.
Islamic State is also poised to cut off supply lines between Turkey and rival rebel groups in Aleppo, after seizing territory in the north, compromising the Syrian army's attempts to retake the city.
US 'must attack Syria' to defeat Islamic State
On Thursday, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, said that US forces would have to attack Islamic State forces in Syria, as well as Iraq, to defeat it.
US forces have been launching airstrikes in northern Iraq to support beleaguered Kurdish peshmerga, after Islamic State forces seized swathes of northern Iraq.

Am I correct in Thighness’ calling Petraeus ‘BetrayUS’? Or someone on her staff did?
I sense a CheckMate coming up.
I still think its likely hell be made into a martyr....Remember the ugly black widow spider dress that moochelle wore at his first acceptance speech?
Yes. What about it?
I highly suspect and would be surprised if it was nothing but another lie from the Obama regime.
Obama could care less about ISIS, the only reason he's done anything thus far was for purposes of political cover amidst the public outcry over genocidal slaughters in Iraq. And even then, Obama, has done the bare minimum militarily. In fact, I would venture to guess he has spent more time crafting statements to the press then he has crafting policy against ISIS.
Obama wants Assad gone and he wants Middle East stability gone so that Islamic rule can fill the vacuum. The Arab spring is his behind the scenes project and Syria is the next domino he wishes to topple. Any excuse Obama can use to bomb Syria will be the beginning of yet another Obama subversion of what the American people want him to do with the powers they give him to do it with.
I never understood their going against Iran and Russia in this in the first place. What better way to get the approval of Christian America than to create the situation where think they are finally doing the right thing.
“where they (we) think they are finally doing the right thing.”
Sorry, sugar crash.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
Or something like that.
Just trying to make sure I have this right...
The enemy of my enemy is the friend
...of my friend of my enemy of my enemy
...of my enemy’s friend
...or something like that?
Doesn’t that make me my own worst enemy???
...Or is it still BHO?
...Or is he just our own worst enemA???
BHO,Clinton, and Kerry show the utter meaninglessness of an Ivy League education.
These people are fools.
Agree. In the absence of a viable good choice, choose the lesser evil, if pressed. A nasty secular regime is preferable to Islamic fundamentalism. I’d have even aligned with the Soviets against Afghanistan’s mujahideen, if faced with the choice.
I tell my son often these past few years that this Admin is driving the military to the same position they were in at Rome just prior to the Caesars... For one thing, imagine being told not to fire back when fired upon... just deliver a free meal to your attackers...
911....the maniacs were Saudi. Pakistan...where Osama hung out for years. The Tsarnoff bombers...refugees from a region whose radicals we support. Qatar...probably funding ISIS types. The gov we try to topple in Syria....would be a successful partner in fight ISIS if the US weren't funding, training, and providng arms to try to topple the Assad government. Libya...hows that going for our oil interests?
No, we need to clean up our mess at home, allow Russia its sphere of influence, don't topple thugs who provide for their people, don't create wars, and protect minorities. Our policies have not been based on the principles the US was founded on, and it's coming back to slap us in the face.
If we had energy independence, we would then care less about who runs the Middle East.
It should have been the top national priority after the Arab Oil Embargo in 1973.
Energy independence is not something you conjure up. Literally trillions in subsidies later, no one has come up with a way to produce gasoline cheaper than from oil or with a viable alternative fuel to gasoline that matches it on price and versatility. At $200 per barrel, we are energy independent, because a huge chunk of our deposits are economically viable at that price. But $200 oil will crush the economy. Because whether we are buying it from the Middle East or domestically, $200 oil is well above what the country can afford without going into recession.
