Since October, 155,000 New Mexico residents have joined the states Medicaid rolls, pushing total enrollment to more than 630,000, or nearly a third of the states population.
On top of that, 410,000 New Mexicans are enrolled in Medicare, the federal health care program for the elderly. Together, total enrollment in those two federal programs are more than 1 million, or half of the states 2.1 million population.

Its shocking, and when you add that to the outmigration of people and the lack of economic growth, its almost an incentive to stay poor, said retired University of New Mexico economics professor Allen Parkman.
Paul Gessing, director of the Rio Grande Foundation, a free-market think tank in Albuquerque, said the Medicaid figure was distressing, especially considering that 20 percent of the states population is on food stamps.
Its sad, and one of the things we should look at is that a lot of folks in New Mexico would be better off not being here. Thats the harsh reality, Gessing said.

Liberal utopia is to take from the haves and give to the have not so everyone is in need.
Which is the same percentage as Old Mexico.
Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and the Rio Grande Corridor are full of enviro liberals and that is where the majority of the population lives. The east side and west side of the state is mostly conservative with the exception of the reservations. We are outvoted by the progressives.
Just raise taxes and bring in some illegals. That’s a recipe for success according to democrats.

Wow, i’m over 65 and retired, on SS and Medicare, have lived in NM since 1955. I paid SS taxes since I was 15, paid Medicare taxes till I retired. Now I pay the Medicare Premium about $104.00 a month and the deductible and the 20% co-pay. It seems the posters here lump us in the medicaid pile that pay no premium, no deductible, no co-pay and get dental and eye care the elderly who need those 2 most don’t get in Medicare. I do not consider myself as an entitlement moocher or welfare state recipient. I know people still working but within the ACA guidelines and get an ACA premium subsidy where they pay a smaller premium than medicare recipients do. Getting lumped in constantly as some welfare moocher makes you want to turn in your conservative badge.
What about the ‘Old’ Mexicans ???
Maybe Nancy held him back on that, or maybe it was her friend Howard Baker.
I think the poster was just saying that most people on Medicare or Medicaid look to government for greater benefits. You are not “most”, however.
NM used to have higher gasoline prices than TX, but I don’t know if that is still the case. Overall, the state looks much poorer than TX.
Pete Domenici looks pretty good in retrospect out of what NM offers.
The American people lack the ability to understand what you just posted.
It’s stunning, isn’t it?
Welcome to the land of entrapment.

With most people who work for a living, Social Security is not a choice. It is a requirement.
It is the same with Medicare. Once you hit 65, you are required to be on Medicare Part A. No choice. You are dragooned into it by law.
These are not "optionals" like welfare, SNAP/EBT, Medicaid, and a host of other Democrat Party voter "benefits". They are Federally mandated law. Sure, they were passed by Democrats with the intention of making people dependent on their largesse but they are not optional.
I don't want to be lumped in with the welfare and Gibsmedat crowd either just because I hit 65 and am on them as well.
