Brain boxes had better brace themselves, because the latest bit of bad news is that the world is becoming a dumber place.
IQs have not only plateaued in many developed countries around the world – including the UK, Australia, US and in Scandinavian countries – they are actually measurably dropping.
It’s an important enough development for it to be the cover story of this week’s New Scientist magazine, which hits newsstands today.
Throughout the 20th century, we were getting smarter and smarter – each generation brainier than the last.
Scientists were not sure why but, at the rate we were getting smarter, they were confident someone was going to figure it out eventually.
However, according to the New Scientist article Are we evolving stupidity?, there are now signs that IQs are dropping.
Ever since IQ tests were accepted as a measure of intelligence around 100 years ago, we have been getting brighter. In the US, the average IQ rose by 3 points per decade. It was a similar story in the UK and Denmark, and Japan experienced a seven-point-per-decade jump after World War II.
This went on until the late Seventies, when everything seemed to slow down. More than 30 years later there is now a measurable decline – a 1.5-point drop in Denmark, for example.

I’d be racist if I said it was because of Middle-Eastern immigration to the UK, so I won’t say that.

We used to be able to remember at least 12-15 phone numbers. Can you do that now? The more electronic devices we have,the less we know.
Erase the welfare state, and IQ’s will resume their upward march.

Interesting that the picture from the article shows a mob of Caucasian zombies. I bet the IQ drop has a DIRECT link to migration from those from out of the continent.

Correction. IQ’s are not dropping. THE AVERAGE IQ IS DROPPING.

Try separating out the native Brits from the bearded ones who are arriving and multiplying and give me the corrected numbers.

This may be a factor, but ....
We tax productive people up to their eyeballs to subsidize a lavish, by any historical standard, lifestyle for the incompetent. Fertility rates fall in developed countries for a number of reasons, but punitive taxation is one, and it especially targets the middle and upper classes. Immigration is a second factor, for reasons that Jason Richwine got fired for noticing, and being rash enougth to commit to print.
And the high percentage of them who marry and mate with their first cousins. But it would be wrong to say that.
I think that IQs started to fall a few thousand years ago. The only reason we perhaps have a higher level of technology has only to do with the fact that ‘we are standing on the shoulders of those who came before us’.
The brain is an organ.
More likely a drop in IQ is why they let those migrants in.
The migrants are probably the smart ones.
