Those little bundles of joy are going to cost you big time.
A child born in 2013 will drain an average of $245,340 from his or her middle-class parents over the kids first 18 years on Earth, a federal study revealed on Monday. And that doesnt even include the cost of college.
The figure is up $4,260, or almost 2 percent, from the year before, according to the report from the annual United States Department of Agriculture.
Factoring in inflation, the total cost will turn out to be closer to $340,480 in actual greenbacks spent.
The latest figures blow away results from the studys first year, in 1960, when a middle-class household spent about $25,230 or $198,560 in 2013 dollars to raise a child until age 18.
The federal analysis split the country into four regions, and, predictably, the Northeast was the most expensive for parents.

Is that how much it will cost taxpayers to raise all the illegal aliens Obama brought in too?
So the government is paying how much to raise the welfare babies?
It’s creating an environment of a few elites and massive uneducated underclass.
Easier to eliminate once robots make nearly all workers obsolete
I think it's a safe bet to say that if you're a single parent, your costs are lower. If you fit the "model", they are WAY higher. But ONLY because said single parent is sucking the life (AND TAXES) from your family, and voting your rights away every chance she/he gets.
There is no way it costs 20K per year per kid when the median income is around 35-45K total.
Why doesn’t the government give us the figures of what it costs each tax paying family to rear the welfare cold an illegal alien child? We never get the total on children we should not be responsible for, do we?
cold=child. ( I hate my IPad)
I agree. I’ve been seeing this dross around for a while now.
Yeah, things are expensive. But it doesn’t cost that much just to have a kid.
I’m having my first (in a few hours, perhaps.. Wife is having some pains, wish me luck) and I’m a statistical analyst. I have calculated over and over again - because it’s what I enjoy doing - and the costs aren’t that bad.
My shooting habit costs more.
look like inflation in education, clothing, healthcare and food. The greed of the education establishment. 2% to 18%
Mind if I ask how you found the kids to play with? Is there a website or formal organization that homeschoolers can meet?
What you’re doing as a parent is commendable. It serves as an inspiration to many of us I’m sure.
As far as NY someone has to pay for the mayors trips.
Right now we are paying the price for people listening to this nonsense 20+ years ago.
I simply refuse to believe that we are here to amass as much money as possible in our lifetimes, to simply wither away alone in an old-age home (or face a death panel).
For some balance, these articles might include how much more people pay in income taxes when they DON’T have children; now workers are simply subsidizing the children of many who will never do an honest day’s work in their lifetimes (and often haven’t had a W-2 issued in their families for generations).
