I can’t believe people actually survived without a phone glued to their head 24/7 in years past.

I've had verizon for years. Verizon has long permitted online management of a device. Each of my children has experienced their device going dead when my calls or texts went ignored. Very shortly after deactivating, I would receive a frantic call from an unknown number. It would be one of the boys telling me their phone no longer worked.
I would reply that since I pay the bills and my calls went unanswered, I didn't need the device anymore. Message received.

This story says so much about our current society:
The idea that kids have to be in constant contact with their parents. As another poster said, there used to be a time when you could go a whole day without talking to your parents and no one thought anything of it.
Kids who ignore their parents vs. parents who want to control their kids (if you don’t respond, I’m going to shut down your phone . . .).
I’m not sure kids with cell phones is a good idea precisely because it creates a situation where they can be in constant contact with a parent.

If you’ve raised a kid who thinks it’s an option to ignore your calls, you will probably have worse problems further down the road.

Most cell services offer the same thing across all their phones, not just smart phones. Some are pretty good, allowing no texting or calls to anybody but family members or 911 during hours that the parents set.
my coworker got a frantic call from his daughter saying her phone wasn't working. He explained the calling/texting blocking to her and said it was school time and her phone was working just fine.

Frustrated Mom Creates Ignore No More App To Get Teen Kids To Return Calls
This app should be REQUIRED during school hours. Kids have no "NEED" to be able to contact anybody except 911 and Parents. This is a losing battle.
Where did all the adults go?
What we need is a cell phone that is hard wired, hardware (ROMs), NOT software, limiting calls to Mom, Dad and one other emergency adult, and 911.
Problem solved.
Anything else is a fool's errand.
Even very young children can circumvent any contrrols that reside in software. Or find an older loser (or drug dealer) who can.
