When you get farmers, dentists and folks who have never fought before going up against a ruthless opposition in Assad, the notion that they were in a position to suddenly overturn not only Assad but also ruthless, highly trained jihadists if we just sent a few arms is a fantasy. - Barack Obama to CBS on June 22
Editor's note: Obama reiterated the statement to Tom Friedman of The New York Times in an interview published on August 9.
In one sentence, U.S. President Barack Obama disregarded the thousands of soldiers who defected from the Syrian Army since the uprising against Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011.

Assad is the best available option.
Talking points / Partisan Media Shills ping.
There is still a Free Syrian Army faction dedication to liberty and freedom. It’s just that Islamofascists co-opted the movement for convenience. But Obama’s attacking the average street fighter rather than Muslim Sharia kooks.
Yeah sure if you say so.
Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Kerry are idiots incapable of understanding, less successfully dealing with, the situation in the Middle East. It’s “amateur hour” in our national leadership and has been for years.
The rest of the world dislikes Obama. The Republicans dislike Obama for what he is doing to The United States. The Democrats dislike Obama for what he is doing to the Democrat Party. Obama doesn’t like the job of being President. Probably the only people who still want Obama as President are Valerie Jarrett and George Soros.
Just as Mubarak was.
And Kadaffy.
Gee, people, aren’t we glad this fool was not around to lead us in the American Revolution— us rubes with pitch forks and farmers in the dell types?
What a colossal *airhead* is this intellectual splinter for a president. He needs to resign for reasons of high ignorance and acute embarrassment.

Glad our founding fathers did not believe this!
At this point, the only people I can see that we might consider arming are the Kurds in Iraq. At least they’ve been solid allies.
We did have a lot of military experience on our side in the form of George Washington and nearly all continental army leadership.
The militia on the other hand were largely without the experience but did act as an effective harassing force.
“And Kadaffy.”
And Hussein.
We were arming the Syrian insurgents a good year prior to Obumbo saying we would in fact arm the, I suspect we’re already arming the Kurds.
The really interesting thing to me is this. When the whole ISIS in Iraq thing started it was a few thousand fighters or so we were told. How are they holding all this land with so few? Someone isn’t telling us the truth. That army is probably a hundred thousand strong by now. They never lose battles. Fighting on multiple fronts. Western govt’s have hard time explaining what a peaceful religion Islam is if the numbers too large.
Egypt was civilized. Those 2 weren’t. Hussein got what he deserved and so did his sons.
Thank God the French didn’t believe it either.
And look how much better off Iraq is today./s
