My two favorite haunts as a teenager were the Russian Orthodox Cathedral on Boston’s Fenway, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church near Forest Hills Station in the Jamaica Plain Section of Boston. Even then, I had to be careful to sing in Russian in the Russian Church, and Ukrainian in the Ukrainian Church.
Tensions are probably even higher now than they were then.
At the time, I was not religious, and this was NOT my family tradition, but my Dad had clued me into the gorgeous music in these churches because a Navy buddy of his was in the choir.
The Syrian Orthodox Church had some good music too, albeit more “oriental” sounding, and it was in ARAMAIC!
I grew up in a VERY mixed neighborhood, and we all got along. Greeks, Jews, Arabs, Blacks, Italians, and Irish. The idea that Boston had segregated neighborhoods is a fallacy. There was, of course, a ghetto, like any city, but, oddly enough, that was where THESE Eastern Churches were located! LOL!
AND, interestingly enough, although the “Lyin’ King” touts the “Contributions of Islam to the Foundation of America”, all the Arabs I knew were Christians, and the only mosque within a 100 mile radius was a tiny little place in Quincy. Since most people acknowledge Boston as “The Birthplace of the American Revolution”, one would think that there would have been a lot of Historic mosques on the Freedom Trail along with Kings Chapel, The Afro-American Meeting House, The Old South Church, the Old North Church, and Boston’s oldest Synagogue. I served as a guide on the Freedom Trail and I don’t remember a single mosque! Did I miss something? Was the ancient mosque where the Tea Party was plotted left off the tour for some reason? Was “One if by land and two if by sea” shone from a minaret? I think not.

I don’t think I have commented in a very long time on your Canteen thread, but when I come across it, I am always so impressed by the posts and conversations of those participating.
I couldn’t help but smile when I saw your emergency (phone) numbers—thanks for posting it!
Please add me to your ping list too.

In time of emergency no phone or radio is necessary for prayer. The line is never busy. Results can be immediate.

Amazing Grace (Click)
By John Newton
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. . Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! . Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. . The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as life endures. . Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace. . The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, Who called me here below, Will be forever mine. . When weve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, Weve no less days to sing Gods praise Than when wed first begun.

DEAR LORD, who suffered torment, agony, and death upon the Cross to free our souls from the chains of iniquity, protect and defend our troops. Guide them in the performance of their duties. Strengthen them to endure hardship, danger and deprivation in Your service. Let their efforts free the people of Iraq and Afghanistan from the chains of terror and slavery, foster a lasting peace in the region, and bring all to a greater share in Your Mercy. Amen. |
