In Iowa, a dispute over neighbor’s chickens threatens Braley’s Senate bid

Brooklyn, Iowa — The battle for control of the U.S. Senate could come down to a dispute between two neighbors in this heartland hamlet over four plump, wander-prone hens.

This spring, Pauline Hampton’s chickens roamed onto Bruce and Carolyn Braley’s vacation property on tranquil Holiday Lake. Hampton said she did not know this until she walked over one day to offer Carolyn a dozen fresh eggs. To which she said her neighbor replied, “We aren’t going to accept your eggs — and we have filed a formal complaint against you.”

Carolyn took her complaint to their neighborhood homeowners’ association board meeting in May. Her husband, Bruce, then called the association’s lawyer, Thomas Lacina, to say that he believed “chickens are not pets and should not be permitted at Holiday Lake,” and that he wanted to “avoid a litigious situation,” according to an e-mail Lacina wrote. Braley denied that he threatened a lawsuit.

Regardless, Hampton relented and built a wire fence in her back yard to contain the chickens. No harm, no fowl — in the Braleys’ yard, at least.

Erst seems poised to win, and we need her to.

I live out in the country one roster decide he like to travel several hundred yards and stay in my Neighbors pole shed.

I told the neighbor eat him next time he came over.

Well the neighbor seem a bit reluctant to do so.

Off with that chicken’s head it was made a fine stew.

....and gosh, I’d just found a great recipe and never got to use it, haa! Travelling chickens taste better...more seasoned, haaa!

I grew up visiting grandparents who had farms all around them as well as theirs. So, I learned early how to be a good neighbor to others by watching all of them be good neighbors for 80 plus years. Everyone kept their animals on their farms and if one escaped, it went to the head of the menu!

Some months ago, the editor of the Albia, Iowa newspaper described Braley as “an elitist, condescending turd.”

Was that an endorsement, or intended as criticism?

lol

Coming from a newspaper man, it’s a fair question. I think this guy is one of us, tho...

Thanks, I kinda figgered that.

But I couldn’t help thinking that perhaps every candidate endorsed by, say, the NYT in the past twenty-five years would fit the description.

As of course would every member of the NYT staff.

At any rate: Wipe Braley!

Take a look at “Albia Newspapers.”

The editor is a low key guy...

Red, them vaqueros down the road don't keep chickens. They keep fighting cocks. Won't be long before they have nice little Gallera put together for Sunday afternoon events, to which they will undoubtedly invite you.

Nothing foreign about cockfights, George Washington loved'em. Sit in the back and don't drink with'em. Our undocumented Democrats have a whole lot of Injun blood and the only sauce they can really handle is made from chili peppers.

BTW, the Mexican word for the loser in a cockfight is "Dinner."

Gracie, range-free may be absolutely correct. Many Elizabeth Warren Gluten Free Foodies might like their chicken raw. Conserves energy resources.

Where I live, the coyotes would be thrilled to find some free range chickens...emphasis on “free”, as in “free meal”!

WARNING!

Poulet à Citroën is only for la salade de poulet. The traction avant chews'em up quite a bit and the feathers may clog the Rzeppa Joint.

I was thinking the same thing. But the Rats always go and complain to the "power". A conservative would have just bought a free ranging cat. ;)

I live in mountain lion country, even the dog has a roof on it's kennel. If the in the yard, we are watching.
