Ebola's spread to the United States is "inevitable" due to the nature of global airline travel, but any outbreak is not likely to be large, US health authorities said Thursday.

You’re not supposed to worry. Lots of things are inevitable. Most of them won’t happen until after you die... which is also inevitable.

Inevitable? It’s already here.

They should know...they brought it here.

Seems like not that long ago anyone that voiced concern about Ebola spreading to US was laughed at as if they were a clueless, racist, buffoon. That was before the 2 patients were brought into the US. Any suggestion that an illegal might bring in Ebola, or that we should be concerned about someone bringing it in on a flight is still met with some ridicule.

Ebola's spread to the United States is "inevitable"...

Not very comforting to read this after they've just flown two people into the US with the virus.

Aren’t we to share the good and the bad with the family of nations, until death do us part?

Isn’t it part of the One World government that the last four presidents have promoted?

Even moreso is the additional possibility of antibiotic resistant bacteria. All it would take is an illegal with tuberculosis, and either a lack of treatment or incomplete antibiotic treatment, and some coughing and then people either inhale it or pick it up off an unclean surface.

Yeah, I'll never forget Brian Cox intoning, "...the era of stars is over, and yet the universe will exist for another trillion trillion years."

Haunts me.

Do not get on an airplane and your odds of not catching it will increase.

It took exactly one day for them to go from,

“We know how to contain a disease like Ebola”

to

“It’s coming, lots of people are going to die, and the outbreaks will be large.”

1 day.

We should start a pool on what the R0 of this bad boy is.

“Who had 4! Oh, he died. Who was close? Dead too?”

Spread? It’s being brought here intentionally.

That Doctor and Nurse in Atlanta? How long will they be shedding Ebola HF virus? Days? Weeks?

As a physician, the more I dig around in literature on viruses the more amazed I am that everything we’re told to tell patients in clinical practice is either flat-out wrong, or intentionally obtuse. I can’t tell and the difference is killing us.

For example, we’re told to tell patients who take antivirals for influenza virus that they’re okay to go back to work 24 hours after their last fever/while on the antiviral. Fact is, they can be shedding flu virus for 72 hours or MORE after they’re asymptomatic of fever.

Infectious mono? A month and you’re back in the game? Contact sports okay? Fine, but how long will you be shedding virus? A month? Three? Try upwards of six to 12 months and 18 months isn’t unheard of, fact is, mono virus (EBC, CMV) are like the gift that keeps on giving being one of the four most common causes of recurrent fever in adult populations. You could be shedding the virus and not even know it YEARS after the primary illness which you get as a toddler, not high school or college.

Chicken pox? Fugeddaboudit. You can be shedding virus before you feel the first tingle or burn of shingles and the same holds true of other herpes viruses.

Strep bacterial infections is even MORE fun, as about 25% of humans carry group A strep (colonized), spreading it with every handshake.

So what about Ebola HF? That’s what I’d like to know. Very little is known or published about this kind of data and it’s crucial to know before those two in Atlanta are released to the general population to put us all at risk. I’ve read that the virus can be found in some body fluids for several weeks after recovery. Does that put the good doctor in isolation into September? Longer?

The current outbreak isn’t the Zaire strain that kills up to 90%, it’s “only” the strain that kills about 50% of those infected but that sounds like Vegas odds to me where the house always wins.

So why bring such an unknown into the country?

Who made this decision? On whose authority?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I find it odd the swine flu scare response vs Ebola. Do they only scare the us populous when a money making vaccine is involved? People who were refusing swine flu vaccine were having their careers threatened.

The last thing we need to worry about is the two medical people in our most sophisticated treatment clinic, especially since there has been Ebola kept in America for decades.

The spread won’t come from those two.
