NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell shouldn’t have to testify about how cheerleaders are paid, his attorneys argued in court filings on Tuesday.
“The request for a deposition of Commissioner Goodell is unwarranted and is, at best, a fishing expedition or, at worst, an improper ploy for media coverage,” Goodell’s lawyers wrote (PDF) in response to a subpoena.
To justify the subpoena, Ferrari’s attorney cites a 2009 “Radio Broadcast Rights Agreement” (PDF) involving the Bills and Citadel Broadcasting (CMLS) in which Citadel agrees to have cheerleaders on the squad (the “Buffalo Jills”) sign an attached agreement stating that they “will not obtain payment for appearances at the Buffalo Bills football games.” (The document was submitted by the Bills as evidence in the team’s unsuccessful work to get the case dismissed on the ground that the cheerleaders have been independent contractors, not workers owed minimum wage.) Goodell’s signature is on the document, beneath the word “APPROVES:”.

Get rid of all of the cheerleaders. When you see them up close and in person, it makes you want to go back to watching football on a black and white set. Green Bay Packers, now there’s some real cheerleaders.
I know a girl whose daughter is a Jill. I was surprised how little they are paid...next to nothing. It might as well be volunteer work.
(yes yes I know it is their choice to be a cheerleader... but it was still surprising how little it was )

Now that the labor relations board has ruled that all McDonald’s franchise employees are also Mcdonald’s employees, does this mean the cheerleaders are NFL employees?

I am surprised how little they are paid too - but they all have to turn many girls away - especially Dallas - where being a cheerleader is considered a great way to A: get into acting B: get into modeling C: get a rich husband.
I mean, as long as more girls want to do it for free than are needed to fill the rosters, it obviously means that the benefits are tremendous.
Roger should know better than to screw with the ladies and then not pay them.

yes- but i’m sure many of these girls use it on resume’s to with the hopes of getting jobs as models, swimsuit models, broadway actors, pole dancers (oops), etc...
plus there’s also the potential of appearance fees...

Yeah, I heard the Dallas Cowgirls got something ridiculous like twenty-five bucks a game. And the team uses their images on posters and promotions virtually everywhere.
They can certainly afford to do something a little better than THAT.
