A Democrat U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner made a rambling argument suggesting that certain speech should be outlawed on college campuses.
According to The Daily Caller, Michael Yaki, also a former senior adviser to Nancy Pelosi (shocking), made his comments during a briefing last week.
The civil rights commissioner said he favors outlawing speech that would be grossly unpopular, such as a slave auction at a fraternity engagement or a celebration of Latino culture that involves making everyone dress as janitors and mop floors.
Are parties like that such a big problem on campuses? (No.) On occasion, a poorly-thought-out themed event will occur, but isnt that the perfect opportunity for students to learn about what is socially acceptable through peer pressure?
Yakis reasoning for wishing to limit First Amendment protections on campus is that theres a large group of people whose brains have not yet fully developed living in a geographically compact area and they need to create a campus atmosphere (read: confirmity of thought).
Unfortunately, college campuses are not known for allowing free speech or free thought. Conservative speakers are routinely harassed, protested against, or even prohibited from speaking on college campuses. A study showed that over 70 percent of campuses already have regulations limiting free speech.
A college education should include exposure to different ideas and theories and the development of critical thinking skills, which is possibly what this commissioner is afraid of.
People in college are not “kids”. The vast majority are over 18 and therefore adults.
We need to stop extending childhood forever and making excuses for people. If adults do/say stupid things then they should pay for it through loss of respect, prestige etc.
Yeah. They're called "college professors."
I guess Nancy’s not the only one on drugs.
IOW, he needs to resign, or be removed.
And I wonder, did he mention Judeophobia as something that should be banned? Because, y’know, Facebook doesn’t think it should be.
Hey, college administrators are no prize either.
If the brains of students are not fully developed, they have no business paying so much and being in school where they should have fully developed brains and should be able to do higher level academic work.

Ask him if that should have been done in the 1960s and ask for a response
